Recommendations on a new CPU :)

Howdy

I have a box thats nearly 3 years old, with a C2Duo E4600, at 2.4Ghz, and with a lowly FSB of 800

that said, i am looking to upgrade it, but i havent really kept my hand in, with whats what, so am looking for some recommendations, or does it still hae enough grunt to go forward? please bear in mind, that the system this runs in, has to sit in a quiet room, so noise is a consideration.

ie. no overclocking!

What is your motherboard? No point recomending an incompatible chip (download and run cpuz if youre not sure)

watching movies and games, although havent done gaming in a while, but i would like the extra ooomph, just incase.

i should have mentioned, if i get a new CPU, then i will get a new m/board and RAM also, as it will certainly be a different platform

You could clock that at 3.8 - 4 with no noise issues, take off a tenner for free delivery and you're just under 400 bucks, theres loads of room to shave off a bit of money too!

What PSU does the OP have and what graphics card??

What games do they intend to play??

Does the OP intend to overclock??

The E4600 with its high multiplier should be able to hit 3GHZ at least.

Also,with Intel Sandy Bridge being released in January it would be better for the OP to wait until then, if they intend to change to a new platform.

Either wait til Jan as Cat says or go for an i5 set up as above but without the stupidly over priced and unneccessary cooler

You can keep the same board. Upgrade ram and get core 2 quad
