I've got a friend coming down to visit over new year and he wants to see the Southbank firework show in town.

I have no issues with that - i just REALLY can't be bothered with attempting to get home afterwards, so can anyone recommend a hotel nearby? (preferably North of the river... maybe around Leicester Square or something).

I spend most of my waking hours in London but i'm at a loss when it comes to actually picking a hotel as i've never needed to use one! :p

So yah, if anyone could recommend a nice one (price isn't really an issue - i'd rather stay in a nice place as opposed to a cheap hell hole!).

Or.... if anyone has better suggestions for any attractions in town that night!

Cheers!

How bad is the tube really that night? Any worse than the typical rush-hour? lol

I could get the Central Line all the way home, but sod it if it's going to be silly

Hilton Waldorf is where I stayed a few times in London (Well used to, I live here now so don't need a hotel). It's near Covent Garden. Before that it was the Crowne Plaza Blackfriars but I think that is closed for renovation.

If not, the Crowne Plaza up on Gloucester Road is OK too.

If you go for the park plaza on lambeth embankment it has a better section called the riverside which has Thames views of parliament and depending on room maybe the london eye .:.. always like that if staying in central London

I went to the fireworks at South Bank a couple of years ago and getting home wasn't actually that bad. It was a slow shuffle towards the stations, but if you're with mates and you've had a good time it's not so bad. It does take a while to get to the trains though.

I went to the London fireworks in 2008 fantastic, nearly 30 mins. I also went to the fireworks in 2009, 10 minutes. Cutbacks apparently.

So I guess this year they'll have a chav from a ***** estate letting off some bangers, I'm not bothering this year.

Really? We thought about going last year but never did, sounds like it's best we didn't. Like you said, 2008 was absolutely amazing and went on for ages!

How can you have cutbacks to fireworks? Surely that can't be allowed!

Finding a room probably isn't the issue, it's what you are prepared to pay.

One thing though is that the Tube usually runs all night on NYE and it's not super busy after midnight has passed.

You could easily take one to a hotel a little further out... or drive and park somewhere, as many National Rail services probably wont run.

The tube's quite bad but people spread out so once you're out of the few main stations in central it's fine, besides you won't get a decent hotel room now anyways, bit too late.

To be honest if you get a little bit drunk with all your mates, you'll not notice the queues because you'll either be talking crap with your mates while you queue, or you'll spend ages wandering around before you remember that you need to go home and the queues won't be so bad. It's a good time, as long as the fireworks aren't crap like someone suggested.

When I went, I really didn't think I could be bothered but it was a great night, there was no trouble, everyone in high spirits, the fireworks were world class, and getting home was slow but no trouble. I'd recommend it, and ordinarily I'm no huge fan of London in general.
