I'm going to work on reducing the temps of my two 470's in SLI

For the bottom card I'm going to fit a Zalman VF-3000 and replace the TIM with MX-4

Since one of those coolers wont fit on the top card (not enough room) I'm thinking to fit one of those backplates (?) and direct one of those antec spot coolers onto the back of it.

But i cant seem to find that backplate on the OC site - I'm sure i've seen it before on there....can anyone link it?

Also, I'm thinking of replacing the TIM on the top card as well (the one keeping the reference cooler) - but am i right in thinking I can use the MX-4 on the gpu chip, but the other parts use thermal pads? will i need to replace those or can i use mx-4 on them. Do OC sell these as well?

Thanks Raven. I'm guessing since thats an external link OC don't sell them.

What about the thermal pads on the reference cooler - do I need to replace them when I open up the card to replace the TIM on the gpu or can i just reuse the ones on there

Edit:

Just seen your update about the pads

So I cant replace the thermal pads with MX-4 I suppose

You can re-use them too.

I Ordered my 480 backplate from EVGA Europe, took three days to arrive. Where there is thermal pads you should reuse them as they are a certain thickness to make good contact, so using TP instead may not have good contact with the heatsink.

the back plate is good but will only drop ur temps by about 2c thats it. best bet invest in a good all round air case like the haf x.

Yea, I've looked at that - but also what I need is a different Mobo as well with better spacing for the pci-e slots (I have the P6X58D-E) but it's a lot of money to change case and mobo...

With the backplate and a spotfan I know it might only be a few degree's, but those at the top end make all the difference :)

Also, I'm hoping if the bottom card is running *a lot* cooler from the Zalman - then there wont be as much hot air rising off it straight into the top card, which might help too.

Built my system into a HAF-X on Wednesday, and have 470's in SLI.

And it lowered both cards temperatures by 10c

Althou WoW doesn't push graphics as much as some games. The top card went from 70c down to 60c max.

I had my fan profile on both cards set to 80% max. Now I've dropped it to 75% max. And both cards are overclocked to 760 core at 1.037v.

if u want to lower them loads more buy a Delta fan for the air duct on the cards from the back. can push over 300 cfm but wow on air it great.
i even modded the side fan tie wrapping a 120 mm fan in front of the 200mm fan fit great. blows more air over side of cards.

Don't tempt me. :)

I have thought about putting a more powerful fan in there, but don't think I'd like the noise it would make.
