Question regarding i7 and overclocking.

Do all the i7 9xx range clock the same? (Theoretically)

ie. is it worth buying say a i7 950 over the i7 920, as the 950 starts at 3ghz... and hence will theoretically overclock higher than the 920?

Would the 950 require less volts than the 920 at the same overclcok frequency?

Are there any difference in overclocking potential between the i7 range?
 
You'll get minimal gains from buying for example the 950 over the 930, the 950 will probably clock higher, but we're talking the difference between 4.3 and 4.2Ghz, or even less of a difference.

However, the 980X OC's very well and can hit 4.6Ghz relatively easily, but then again that costs ~£800
 
Even though the price difference isn't much now, I think I'd still get a 930 over a 950. I don't remember anyone saying that they couldn't get their 920/930 to at least 3.8 GHz with a good cooler and that can handle so much it's crazy. If you do a lot of video encoding though and would prefer to have it finish slightly quicker (talking ~2% here) then go for it.
 
I think its worth going for the 950 over 930, on this week only offers its only £15 more for the higher stock clock. I know this probably won't mean much if you are going to overclock anyway but you might as well get the best you can afford at the time.
 
The price difference is only £15 at OcUK though.

The 930 can be had for £199 delivered elsewhere whilst the cheapest 950 I can find is £224. £25 is a fairly big difference for the possibility of an extra 200 MHz or so (depends on luck and motherboard).
 
The 980X is a gulftown, not a bloomfield.

Under air cooling there's nothing between the 920 d0, 930, 950 or 975. Under very good cooling you can be bsck limited around the 220 mark, so there can only be any justification for the faster chips if you think you'll get 4.5ghz out of the cheapest one. Which you wont do with a heatsink, and probably wont with water cooling,.
 
All the Bloomfields will clock to the same lvl, and the heat will be the factor (vcore needed), the starting speed is'nt a factor at all, just the newer ones with a multi a bit higher, just gives more options on bclk thats about it really.
 
Tbh, on air cooling your gonna be limited to 4ghz or so on any of them, unless you get a really good chip, my own 920 DO does 4.0ghz on 1.2750 vcore, during the summer this is the highest i can run. May try a bit higher now that it's a bit colder, load temps in p95 are mid 60's now, what motherboard your using can effect the bclk limit you can reach as well.

Lowest temps ive got.

is this on water cooling? i got the same cpu as you and i use the same vcore at 4GHz but i hit 90c in p95 with a TRUE and Akasa Apache. :(
 
Thats with a Prolimatech super megahelims cooler and dual akasa viper fans, i used to run a lapped TRUE black with the same fans, in the summer when it was warmer, the TRUE was 1-2c better per core. Id check the mounting of the cooler, and how much thermal paste did you apply?

i only apply a grain of rice at the middle of the cpu and then put the heatsink on top and screw it down. always gives me a perfect circle of TIM when i dismount my heatsinks. you think it may not be enough?

With thermal paste, less is better, your temps do seem very high, whats your case airflow like, and room temp?
 
just dismounted the heatsink and again a perfect circle by the TIM. I am using the TIM that came with the TRUE. room temp is 24c and the case is a Lian Li Pc-7FN and it does not provide really great air flow. i mean, with the side panel off i drop down 4c but with the panel on I am hovering between 89 and 92c

i will have to clean up the cpu now and remount the heatsink but this has been bothering me for some time. i ordered the add on top panel for the case that has 2 140mm fans. maybe that will help me but the problem is that i dont have enough intake and it will be counter-intuitive to use the top as intake.
i don't know what else to do. Depending on the room temp I have seen the cpu throttle down to 2.4GHz and the temps hitting 100c :(
 
Probably, unless you get a really good version of either, all that the 930/950 offer over the 920 is a higher stock speed and a higher multiplier, on air cooling, 4.0-4.2ghz, (maybe) is the best you can expect. Watercooling will help push any chip a bit more, but again it depends on how good a chip you get.

an i7 950 is a bloomfield
it will clock to around 4.2 on air and 4.4 on ater

so will

an i7 920, 930, 950, 960, 975

THEY ARE ALL BLOOMFILED CHIPS THEY ALL CLOCK THE SAME

i am getting rather sick of typing this
