oh sorry, I forgot to mention that I dont need a monitor, got a 22" 1680 x 1050 one currently so dont really need a monitor.

also just going to re-use my current copy of windows 7 since the pc it's on is getting scrapped :)

means more money for parts lol.

as for some of the above specs, would there be much worth in upgrading to a i7 950 and a geforce 480 ?

oh edit : its only a tower im building no keyboard or mouse required either, sorry my bad

The 480 possibly, I run one in my system and I am pretty pleased with it, but I would look at a SSD for a boot drive.

950 not really, I would stick with the 930.

crossfire 6870 for ultimate gaming experience.

and i5 is faster in games than a i7 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/191?vs=47 this compares a i5 760 vs the i7 920 which is only a little slower than a 930.

cheers, yea im thinking of overclocking the system so if i can get good preformance out of the 930 i may stick with that, I'll post up what Im thinking of getting.

Room to add another 470 later:

Welcome to the forum. :)

If I was in your position, I would go with something like this: (all prices are approximate)

Intel core I7 860 2.8GHz - £217
Socket 1156 DDR3 motherboard (of some kind) - £100
Corsair DDR3 3x2GB RAM - £105
Samsung 1TB SATA HDD - £45
GTX 470 1,280MB GPU - £190
A good enough Corsair PSU (TX 650W perhaps?) - £70?
Antec 300 gaming case - £70
Akasa Venom heatsink - £36
Blu-ray drive (nice little extra :)) - £40
120mm side fan - £20
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (Full) - £123

All prices from overclockers.uk of course, all for around £1,000, everything you would need for a new build.

This is just a basic idea of what I would do, sorry if it is a bit vague, but this is what I came up with in ten minutes. :)

EDIT: Wow, loads of people posted while I was typing! Also, didn't all of you guys above forget about the OS?

doesnt need win7 as it turns out.

and 6GB memory kit is no good for that dual channel CPU.

and he has a Harddrive.

The i7 860 is probably not worth it, also you have chosen triple channel with a dual channel setup.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 470 SUPER OC 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with MAFIA 2 £229.99

Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard £149.99

Corsair Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit (CMP6GX3M3A1600C7) £129.24

OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G) £104.99

Corsair TX 750W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-750TXUK) £82.00
Coolermaster CM-690 II Lite Dominator Case - Black

thats what Im currently looking at getting, comes to 991 including shipping, any way to improve?

Go with Stulids i5 build! Will out-perform the i7 builds you and RJC have been speccing and is around the same price!

This with an Akasa Venom or Titan Fenrir Evo and you have an extremely powerful gaming pc which will also do 4ghz on either of these two coolers.(Gelid Tranquillo should be fine too.)

wow i really didnt expect the i5 to outpreform the i7.

ok definatley going for an i5 now and overclocking it :)

last 2 questions.

1. better to wait until jan and the possibly release of sandybridge?
2. nvidia or ati? going for a dual gfx card spec

+1 for Stulid's i5 x-fire 6870 spec. A beast! Saying i5 beats i7 is pushing it slightly, especially with dual GPUs. It's like this - with i7/X58 you pay lots more than i5/P55 for three main extra features. Tripple channel RAM, 16x/16x x-fire/sli and Hyperthreading. First two aren't really worth the transistors they're made of in any application. HT can be worth up to 25% in multithreaded encoding type apps, but less gain in most stuff, and pretty much 0 gain in games. So you pay a lot more for pretty much nowt but e-peen bragging rights :) - in games i5 performs the same as i7. i5 7xx is the bang-for-buck sweetspot right now.
