I've purchased a Gelid GPU cooler elsewhere and want to return it as for me its no better than using the stock cooler, fans plugged into the card run at 100% so its noisy, put on a fan controller at low speed for silent and it runs as hot as stock. I fitted the cooler but didnt use any of the thermal pads etc as I wanted to be sure it was what I required so its back in the box as new after being used for 5 mins if that.

Ive been told that I can't return it as its been "used" is this right? Its surely in a resalable condition as none of the "persible parts" if thats what you want to call them have been used.

If i cant then thats fair enough I just want to know where I stand before I moan on to them :)

Cheers

I would suggest it isn't fitted correctly or you have issue in general with cooling your case.

However back to the question in hand, within 7 days you can return it.

That was my understanding, from what i can tell it was fitted fine, as if the fans were plugged into the graphics card they just ran at 100%, my gtx470 idled at 30c and peaked in furmark at about 60C, but as i couldnt control the fans through the card they were too loud, fitting the fan to a fan controller meant it was almost silent but cooling wasnt much better than stock so pretty much a waste of time.

I hope you used something like arctic silver instead - if you used nothing go back and do it properly!

If nothing at all was used in the way of TIM (thermal interface material) then it managing to keep it at stock temperatures would be fairly remarkable in itself.

Bradmax57: You should be able to return it under the DSRs as there are only a very small number of things (such as personalised items or those where hygiene could be an issue) which aren't covered. The CPU cooler wouldn't fit into those categories as far as I can see, provided you've taken reasonable care of it and are returning it within the relevant period. I would note though that a) CPU coolers and the TIM often take a little while to bed in so it may improve over time and b) the DSRs are not intended to give you extra rights over those you would get in a shop - despite what they may actually give you in practice.

I realsie that, but surely using the pads etc would have no effect on the noise of the fans make, which is my main gripe, i bought it hoping for it to be quieter than a stock nvidia cooler which its not, the fans when plugged into the card header run at 100% and are not controllable, therefore there noisy, i can plug it into my case fan controller but there still noiser than my stock cooler (ive no idea what voltage the controller goes from and to on the case fan controller) the only other option was putting them on a zalman 5v resistor cable, it was then virtually silent but temps were higher than using the stock cooler.

It probably doesnt help that ive got a small case (lian li v354) but the stock cooler is a better solution for me noisewise hence I want to return this cooler. IT IS packaged as new but im being told i cant return it as its used.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't some sort of cool & quiet thing running on the board - i.e. it spins faster depending on cpu temp. Without any thermal material I'd expect ti shot up pretty fast, or maybe it's just not turned on in the bios.

They can't refuse your dsr rights, just make sure you've put it in writing before the end of 7 working days.

Is it quite a large company? As I have had dealings with an online PC company that break the law when coming to DSR and refunds. Of course, no mentions here, but msg me if you like. Personally, I would make a complaint to trading standards if they do not honour it.

It certainly is, and ive bought loads off them too, never really had any problems but this just sucks, i will write to them and send it by recorded delivery.

to answer a few other questions above yes I did use thermal interface materials and pads just not the ones used in the kit, ive got plenty of ramsinks, akasa thermal pads and as5 etc etc, i thought i would use my own just incase i wasnt happy with the product as it would make it far easier to send back.......

Oh and its a GPU cooler and not a CPU cooler :D

Ive also noticed that the plug for the fans has only 3 wires therefore would I be correct in thinking it cant be controlled via the card (software) like the stock one which is a 4 wire pwm job?
