Looking for some free software which will change the bitrate of a mp3 file making it smaller so that it fits better on a small hard drive any suggestions?

Re-encoding a file thats already in mp3 format will reduce quality considerably.
This. I recommend you don't do it.

Audacity will do the job, as long you want to convert individual mp3s rather than batch.

JetAudio has a tool that does this built in :)

I ripped my CD collection at 320kbps but it was a little big to put on my old phone with it's lowly 512k memoory card... so I dropped it down to 160 and job done... I didn't notice any major quality loss - but then, playing on a phone headphones isn't exactly hi fi standard is it lol

worth a try though :)

This is why it's a good idea to rip your CDs to a lossless format like FLAC or Apple Lossless :) Then any re-encodes will have the best possible quality.

MP3 is alreadt shrunk , You could convert it to wmv.

You could, but there's no point at all. WMA isn't really more efficient than MP3, and transcoding from one lossy compression format to another always loses quality.

Getting a cheap HD is indeed the best option. Failing that dbPowerAmp and iTunes will convert to a lower bitrate pretty well. Just be aware that the process itself reduces quality.

WMV is also a high compression so it doesn't make a difference changing the format, either way it will be shrunk.

No matter what the OP decides though, I wouldn't recommend he compress any lower than 128kb, any thing lower will have noticably bad quality.

Rather than knocking the idea of what format to convert or why not to, how come nobody has asked what output the computer will have? A vast majority of people can't tell the difference between formats with simply headphones on and average quality speakers won't benefit from lossless formats.

I will also vote for dBPowerAmp

I will also agree with Halfmad on the compression.
I mean, my old MP3 player that I use on the motorbike, is only a 128MB job and while it also has a SD Card slot, I dont use that much.

So, with the 128MB internal, I can fit a far few songs on.

If I compress them to say 96k then I can cram a load more songs on.

Now, this 96K is no good for the PC as the quality is far too low, but on the bike, its fine.

I could go as low as 64K actually, and I might get away with it, but only because the engine noise is also in play, so, I dont go that low.

Who me?

Why?

If I wanted to have loads of music on my bike, then I will chuck in a SD card. I mean, I never said that I dont have any, I have a fair few, but why bother? I only need to play enough songs to last a couple of hours tops, so I throw an album on and if it dont fit, Ill compress it. Job done.

On really long journeys I use my phone. Thats 16GB and I have a mic for when the phone goes.

I said its got a SD slot and so

To save the effort of having to compress every album you put on it?

I just find it bizarre that people go to the effort of converting songs when it costs more in electric than just buying an sd card, 10 years ago it was commonplace but this thread has shocked me!

You really dont want to transcode MP3s, you'll end off with music that sounds terrible for the bitrate you eventually end up with, it's one of the caveats of using a lossy compression algorithm, you're better off just re-ripping it all over again in the lower bitrate.

OMFG with a name like that too!!! LOL

Ok, well, this PC is a Quad Core. Its running 4 clients of FAH 24/7

My Server... Its only a File Server and lets be honest a 386 would do just as well for basic file serving, is also a Quad core... Thats alos running 4 Clients of F@H 24/7

Trust me, but the thought that my PC might, just might use up a penny more power every 1000 years isnt going to scare me into becoming some eco-warrior.

Seriously though... for me, its a non-issue. It takes less than a minute and I only do it once every few weeks, maybe once a month.

If I wanted more, then Id use my phone.

I do agree however, that the idea is almost bordering on thick. I mean, I have moved on to FLAC for my PC's Audio or 320K MP3 to try to keep as much quality as I can, because with 1TB HDs being less than £50 these days, there really is no excuse for it, but for my MP3 player on my bike, I dont need to worry about things.
