ATI or Nvidia

If they fix the rendering issues (GPU is not utilised properly on all/nearly all systems) then tbh you don't need the latest and greatest card to max the game out I'd say 1280x resolutions you'd still get away with an 8800GT/250GTS/4850, 1680x type resolutions an upper end 200 series card or 4870 and 1920x and above 460/5850.

I get the feeling based on the rest of your spec tho your gonna be one of the people who end up buying a 6870 or possibly 6850 in the end regardless of what anyone reccomends heh.

If the game was running properly (cod bo), a single 470/6870 would run it fine. Moh played grand for me at 1920x1200 with a single 470 gtx.

Rroff, I wouldnt ask if I didnt want any info!:) So im seeing people favouring the 470...? Over the ati cards!

It seems that most games are optimized for Ati

With the games mentioned a higher minimum fps would lead to a better gaming experience, NVIDIA are said to have a higher minimum fps so 470GTX.

I would get a 6870 but then you are not me and a 470 in theory sounds like something that would suit you better.

Sorry didn't mean it quite like that.

My personal advice would be the GTX470 as I consider the performance the most consistant out of 470 and 6870 and has better overclocking potential putting it in the GTX480 ballpark (and can even chase the 580 if your brave). But a lot of people prefer the lower power useage, noise levels and less heat output of the 6870 it seems.

Hha dont worry!:))
If I went for a GTX470, would I need a very well vented case? And which model would I go for?

Case ventilation wouldn't really matter as such with this card:

Excellent cooling on it. and a good price with an overclock.

This card is also excellent value with good cooling:

Um, does the 6870 have better cooling for the same price?

Yes, a 6870 stock reference card VS a GTX 470 reference card has much better cooling, but a GTX 470 offers slightly better performance, and when OC to 800mhz+ its on 480 performance

Check this out :both cards are very close to each:

http://www.techspot.com/review/325-amd-radeon-6870/page3.html

6870 : Runs cool,quiet and uses low power compared to a 470

470:Runs very hot, uses lots of power, but can overclock to 800mhz and basically have near 480 performance

Do you want a quiet/cool card? if so a 6870 is the card for you, unless you want one of 470s i linked a page back that use custom coolers and will run a lot cooler than a reference 470.

MichaelM why would you go for the 6870?

I feel AMD offers products which are more efficient and focused on what I use my computer for. If I felt compelled to do folding@home it might change my mind. An NVIDIA for me would be like driving a Prius with the electric motor disconnected, dead weight reducing the fuel consumption figures.

I also tend to play games like HL2 and modifications for it which are easily playable by a wider range of cards and settings. I never liked flashy games with generic storyline which are borderline unplayable unless you drop a few hundred more into your system every other year.

TL;DR: I'm an AMD fanboi!!!!1!1!!1

P.S. I would actually wait for the 69XX series to come out instead, infact I may end up selling my 6870 and getting a 6970 when it comes out.

In reply to comments about my earlier suggestions -

1. The i7 950 is only £15 more than the 930 at the moment.

2. An 800W PSU will support future upgrades such as a second video card and can be purchased for less than the price of the XFX PSU listed.

Andi.

^I'd go for the 470. I haven't used either before in all fairness though I do think you are more likely to get better minimum and smoother frame rates, which is more important than max frames, single gpu v dual. Both will have fetching eye candy, both will run cool. I would imagine the 470 will run quieter.

Recently I took out my 4870x2, popped in a 4890 and it was somewhat smoother. The x2 has always been smooth in my opinion but this was better, and the frame rate was higher than I expected, though not relevant to what we're discussing here.
