is it possible to crossfire a 5870 and 4870

Not possible.
4870 can crossfire with 48xx family (including 4870x2)
5870 can crossfire with 58xx family (although a 5870 can tri fire with a 5970)

Yeh, the Lucid allows you to do that, but i'd whack it on the bay and get a few bob towards another 5870

Forgive me for my ignorance,but what is a Lucid hydra Chip,and what does it do?
I do build my own comps,but never heard of this.

Lucid isn't really Xfire is it now..

x-fire,Lucid, sli are all multi gpu rendering so it is all technialy the same thing by dirrebt companys and Lucid is built into some off the new motherboards which are coming out

Yes, because multi GPU rendering MUST come under the definition of Xfire or SLI.
