ATI or Nvidia

Out of those 2 get the Gigabyte 470 SoC (great card) - theres a time for multi GPU but not when theres a similiar/better card for similiar money than 2 in multiGPU.

Recently I took out my 4870x2, popped in a 4890 and it was somewhat smoother. The x2 has always been smooth in my opinion but this was better, and the frame rate was higher than I expected, though not relevant to what we're discussing here.

Ignoring "microstutter" its quite common with multiGPU systems to get massive scaling in places where they aren't taxed very heavily, but fall down in more intensive scenes so a comparable single GPU will often do better even tho the simplified performance numbers aren't as good.

Which is one of the reasons its better to go for a single card when you can, thats not to say there isn't a case for multi GPU but it tends to be a bit more complicated - i.e. when I got my 8800GT SLI setup it was very slightly faster than a single GTX280 at half the price and didn't do significantly worse comparably when taxed in complex scenes.

^I am tempted to go for a powerful single card next time round, plus the fact that if I go nvidia (more than likely will for a change), it will have to be a powerful single card since my mobo doesn't support sli. Of course, if I upgrade the rest of the rig before the gpu then I'll have the option to do either. Also partly depends on how good the 6900's are I guess and when the time is right to change this old beast. :D

Yeah the GTX470 is one of the times its worth going multi GPU - cheaper than a GTX480 (or was) and considerably quicker and faster even than a single 580 by a decent margin.

Had 2 X 5770 earlier in the year and was very impressed with the performance, around 5870 and better than 5850. Now have this

Just had a go at Mafia 2 and am well impressed. Considering its stock cooling I am getting 36c idle and 77c maxed out on Mafia. I have however bought an aftermarket cooler , this, and will put it on soon.

I would, in the circumstances, recommend this card. Great price for that card and that cooling looks awesome.:D

Rroff, I see your running SLI? But thank you for your information.
Arc@css, have you been with ATI, what do you think of their cards?

Hi. :)

Yes, as you can see from my current sig I am using an ATI 4870x2. I have had this card exactly two years now and have also owned in total six ATI cards over the last seven years.

I have found the driver support fine, though recently the idle clocks being a bit temperamental but nothing major whatsoever.

I do find the frame rate dips compared to recent nvidia cards (have only owned one recent nvidia card : a 260gtx) not as good though in all fairness, this maybe partly due to using a dual gpu card : very high frame rates sometimes, turn in another direction during game and experience a substantial drop..though it's not all that bad. Bottom line is I wouldn't have kept buying ATI cards if the performance wasn't at least adequate.

I expect part of it is due to better game developer relationships for nvidia, quite a few games are out of the box optmised to run better, but a quick hotfix usually sorts that out from AMD. :D

I seriously think that whatever firm you choose you'll end up with something that will allow you to play games nicely. :)

I may add a bit more later but right now my broccoli is being steamed. :D

Um, where did you buy from? But say your PSU could support it, would you of gone for it? Because I like the sound of the ATI card, but Lots of people here are saying the 470 is quality..um

Oh, some place in E Yorks that also sells kitchens lol. Probably still wouldn't of got the 470 in all fairness, even though it's a comparable card, it's not as efficient as the 6870.

Even tho its not as efficient, does it achieve beter FPS?

It's swings and roundabouts really. Looking at benchmarks the 470 and 6870 are a few fps better in some games. They are pretty much identical in terms of graphical power, just that the 470 uses more electricity to do it!
