Hi I am wondering if my psu would prob be enough to run a asus gtx 580 and also enough power to overclock

Reason i ask is i have tried in past using 2 x 5870s in crossfire and even got chance to test a ares 5870 4gb and both of them resulted in my pc screen going blank and making a loud noise like its struggling to power

This i discovered through forums that my psu cant cope

My setup that id be adding this to would be a i7 oc to 3.6 with 6gb ram a ssd drive and 2 standard hd and a bluray drive

At moment i have a 5870 which runs perfect even at high overclocks i get 950 is most stable with voltage tweaks

But anyway main question is would my 800 watt tagan turbo psu support this card with no issues even though its min spec is 600 watt is that the recommendation for the card alone without the extra components ie i reck my i7 oc to 3.5 prob uses quite a lot

Thanks any advice be helpful

After a bit of research and guidance from were i bought it as its a purpose bulit pc i got impression i should have gone 850 watt minimum, its also a water cooled cpu as well if that puts any extra power on i dont no

I assume part of the reason you went with water cooling was to reach a higher clock with lower temps.

Do you really think CPUs go much faster without the need for extra power?

At the time i decided for a change to try watercooling because it looks cool and for the lower temps with it being first pc i had built for me instead of me building my own, and i do no that overclocking uses lots more power am not that daft lol

Would also not want to risk building my own watercooled system

I only have a 750W Corsair & thats been fine even with lots of other devices in my PC. As long as you have a decent branded PSU is around 700W or higher it will be fine @ stock speeds. If you use a cheap PSU it will not be able to supply the Amps.

Sorry but Tagan are not a great PSU brand (why do you think OCUK no longer sell them!) & you should never ever try & overclock your PC unless you have a very good PSU as there is always the risk of damaging components if the PSU is weak. At stock your PSU will probably be ok but stress it too much & that's where you can see problems although the GTX580 is less stressful than 2 x 5870's on PSU's.

The PSU is probably the most important component to buy so always get a very strong & silent model with a decent warranty like Antec, Corsair or OCZ but OCUK also sell other decent models. Look for 700W minimum for a non overclocked system & 800W+ if you plan on SLI/Xfire/Heavy Overclocking.

If you do not have a decent PSU & use high end components you only have yourself to blame if the PSU blows & damages or even destroys the mobo/cpu/gpu (unlikely but it can & does happen when overclocking goes too far & or the PSU is overloaded). Most of the time the PSU will blow first but if its not got great overload protection due to cheaper components it can destroy other components as well ;)

Do you really want to take the chance????

My final thought is Intel i7 oc to 3.6 with 6gb gskill memory with asus p6t deluxe v1 with a ocz ssd drive 2 x normal H drives and a blu ray drive and a creative x fi pro pci slot card running with a Asus Ati 5870 on a 800 watt Tagan turbo edition runs perfectly fine even when overclocked to 950 with voltage tweaks

What does not work is that setup with 2 x 5870s in crossfire or a asus ares as they strain when benchmark stressing

What i want to do is replace my 5870 with a Asus gtx 580 and most likely overclock it to the limits thats been proven to be succesfull

AS i think single gpu is more ideal and cheaper to run

In past i have had 2 x 4850s in crossfire thats what this system started with minus the ssd drive.

depends on the PSU. if your tagan isn't faulty or bad it should be plenty. I wouldnt think overclocked card and cpu would touch 650W. A bad branded PSU will likely have issues when pushed close to its limits. Even if it works, you can expect the fans to go crazy.

That said, it will still work if PSU isn't faulty. Crossfire/SLI requires more Amps on 12V than a single 580. Correct me if im wrong though

Well, Iv just purchased this rig from OC and will be with me on Wed. I have also added a H70 bcooler and a 120 SDD. They assure me it will be fine with the PSU they supply?

System Specification
- Case: Xigmatek Utgard Midi Tower - Black
- Power Supply: Corsair TX 650W
- CPU: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz overclocked to 4.00GHz
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
- Cooler: Xigmatek Dark Knight CPU Cooler
- RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit
- Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache
- Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 580 1536MB GDDR5
- Sound: Realtek 7.1 Channel Sound (On-Board)
- Optical Drive: LG DVD+/-RW SATA Drive

Unless they have underspected the PSU, i would say it's fine.

I think Tagan has a very bad reputation, but that was literally four or five years ago when I last heard about their PSUs exploding under pressure.

A mate of mine had a 1000w Tagan in his i7 rig that went poof after 6-7 months in a system built by another company.

I'd always stick with Corsair as in my opinion they make quality gear.

i only use corsair or enermax also sapphires new supplys are rebranded enermaxs so worth a look

always best not to skimp on the power supply u dont want your rig going up in flames

Ive got a i7 950 @ 3.8GHz, OCZ Vertex 2E 60Gb SDD, 1Tb Samsung F3, LG BlueRay Drive and a GTX580 running off a Sapphire 625W PSU.
It handles it fine.
SSDs have a very low power consumption i wouldn't even add them to the equation.

600W is the min spec with all components. (its max power consumption is 300W - any higher and weird stuff happens)

i think we these tagans then they just cant cope with crossfire on cards like 5870 or higher so if i ever go trying sli or crossfire in future will consider 1000 watts for headroom and look into brands like corsair
