is the Asus Xonar DS a good choice?

soundcards over onboard anyday, but is it worth the cost? if you use your PC for gaming and what not than yes....however for gaming I wouldn't touch the DS.....it lacks dobly headphones ...the DG on the other hand yes I would

Has to be said, I have the realtek HD Audio on my X58A board, and the D2X I bought knocks the socks off it! Clearer, no capacitor whine at all, it just sounds more 'pure'. No hiss, apart from the speaker amp itself, and only audible on the highest it goes.

I think that was worth it! No idea on the cheaper ones of course!

I had the DS for a time, and it was a very good card. Certainly superior to the on-board audio I was using at the time. It's a better card for speakers than headphones TBH, as Uriel pointed out. Although that isn't to say the DS is no good with headphones, it just lacks Dolby Headphone. I agree with AMG, if you are going to use the sound card with headphones for gaming, the DG would be the better purchase.

i am using speakers for now. maybe i'll get a Sennheiser some day.

Ive found one second hand from a friend for only 20euros. maybe i'll get a cheaper offer.

is it wourth it?

For a DS that doesn't seem a bad price. Will you be using a digital or analogue connection to the speakers?

Speakers with a digital connection tend to be more expensive. Logitech z5500 would be one example. Most AV receivers have a digital connection.

Do bear in mind that for most PC speakers, using analogue will give higher quality audio, as the digital to analogue converters in soundcards tend to be higher grade than in PC speakers. With onboard sound the opposite is usually the case.

Not really. The better your speakers, the more chance they'll be improved by a soundcard.

If you use a digital connection, soundcard quality has little to do with it.
