Hi Guys,
I’m new to this forum but not to Overclockers.co.uk I’m doing a new system build my Budget is £600 & would like some advise/input, I’d like an AMD system as it seems I can get more power for less £££ Unless someone can way up a similar Intel system?
I’m looking to buy in and around the first week in Dec I understand prices change daily
So Far I’m looking at:

AMD - Phenom II x4 965 AM3 3.4 GHz Black Edition 8Mb Cache 125W (May Stretch to the 970 if price is right)
Asus M4A87TD/USB3, AMD 870, S AM3, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 2000(OC), SATA 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, ATX
600W - 700W PSU Approx £60 - £70 Any Recommendations welcome
4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, DHX, 1.65v
1TB Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black, SATA 6Gb/s, 7200rpm, 64MB Cache, 8 ms
(I want it to be a SATA III Drive) or I could go for the 2 of the 500Gb SATA III models & RAID them?

ATI 1GB HD 5770 PCI-E (x16), 4800MHz GDDR5, GPU 850MHz, 800Cores Not sure what brand yet again any recommendations
DVD-RW
Gaming case & cooling fans etc again not picked one yet but say around £70 mark....

It will be mainly used for Gaming...... Let me know your thoughts and advice, I thank you in advance.

Antec new truepower 650w psu is an excellent price and quality unit.

and get a GTX460 instead of the 5770.

You do realize that you will get very little noticeable performance boost from getting a SATA6Gbps mechanical harddrive over one on the older SATA spec? As far as I'm concerned the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB is faster than the WD 1TB FEAX in everything except booting, it is also cooler and quieter and less power hungry. Just as long as you are aware of these facts then I'm happy for you to make your choice however you want.

Unfortunately these two are not instock, but they are really high quality and won't need to buy additional fans for them:

Apparently there is only a minor difference between the CoolerMaster CM-690 II Advanced and the Lite version

WOW! What's just happenned to the price of Phenom II quads??!! At the moment i5 760 is cheaper than the Phenom II quad (first time ever?) and is a more powerful CPU at stock speeds, and overclocks much better. Same RAM, and mobos cost pretty much the same range of prices depending on what features you want. The old truth - AMD offers better bang for buck - has been looking tenuous for a long time with only around £20-30 between an i5 7xx and Phenom II 9xx. With these prices, it's just flat out false. Go intel!

I know Phenom II quads are creeping up in price as 4 weeks ago you could get one as cheap at £110 + Del on the web now it's about £125 the chepest for a 965.....

Thanks for the advise guys some mixed comments I see your point Aretenon with the HD but I see it as future proofing, if my M/B supports SATA III then why not use it? It's there so use it?

Also the Nvidia vs ATI is a subjet that will never die.... ATI 5770 or NVidia GTX460 in this case both good for the price but I still opt for ATI due to the amount of cores it has against the nVidia.... More cores the more it can process.

So go on people Please spec me 2 systems one Intel and one AMD as if this £600 was your own I Ask waht would you buy???

Thanks again

I agree with the above post!
I have been toying with getting a new pc myself.

The main difference between my build and this is the mobo.
I was looking at the Asus P7P55D-E Pro mobo.
Altho the Overclockers website does not have the Pro version... :(
Here is a good suffice Asus P7P55D-E

I see your point Aretenon with the HD but I see it as future proofing, if my M/B supports SATA III then why not use it? It's there so use it?

The point is, no mechanical HDD can get anywhere near even the speeds supported by SATA2, let alone SATA3. So a SATA3 controller on a mechanical HDD is a pointless waste of money. Either use a SATA2 Spinpoint F3, or go all out for SSD. Those SATA3 WD HDDs are a waste of money for the performance they give.

Thanks Guys will look into - I see the results for the 5770 vs 460 and WOW
I'd still like a 1Gb of RAM for the VGA so will look at the GTX460 1Gb rather than the 768Mb...

Still erming to the Intel i5 760 2.8Ghz to the AMD PII 970 at 3.5Ghz both being Quad Core
2.8 vs 3.5 still seems to me that the AMD Wins but please prove me wrong or at least show me some benchmarks to compare?

Thanks again people :-)

Cant just compare GHz as the two CPUs are so different. i5 is a faster CPU even at stock speeds. Then consider you can get around a 45% overclock from the i5 760 no problems, but all you'll realistically get out of the PII 970 is another ~15%, as at 3.5GHz it's almost as fast as a PII can get already. No brainer imho.

Why get a 970 when the 1055T is the same price? Also, the i5 760 is pretty much equal to a X4 970 but can overclock much further so would be better still.

Oh Hang on here now someone has banged a 6 Core CPU as it only £150 so closly priced to the 970

As you can tell it's been a long long time since Ive built a system just for gaming....and been a while since ive been into all the PC hardware hardcore benchmarks and reviews. (I was a consultant for Toms Hardware UK contact at one point)
Years ago I was well up there with you lot but the wife always wins...LOL

I see the Intel is looking better as the OC is looking good to whack it up some

Thanks but still unsre what to go for - will keep all your posts in mind though

Totally agree with Liam here. SSD is the futureproof option here. A 500- 1tb samsung F3 is all you would need and then whack a ssd in later. The difference is astounding.
