I am stuck between these two cards. I have never owned a high end Nvidia graphics card before, always went for ATI and just stuck with them. However I am open minded and willing to with any company who offers me the best bang for buck and overall quality.

I have heard quite a bit of rumours that the gtx 470 gets really loud and hot, which isn't too good.

I am more inclined to go down the ati route as my board supports crossfire but not sli. However the chances of meing upgrading to xfire is slim, but I never like to limit myself.

Any advice at all is welcomed.

If I were you, and I had a PSU that could accomodate a GTX 470, I would - the prices for them at the moment are pretty damn good to be honest. If noise and heat worries you, like Amnesia said, there is always the ATI 6870.

How does the 6870 compare to the 5870? Would you say the GTX 470 is the all round better card?

From the benchmarks I have seen, they are very similar, but the 5870 is still slightly faster and costs quite a bit more. Whether it's worth paying the extra for one I am not sure.

GTX 470 is similar to the 6870 in performance but the performancee gain from the GTX 470 overclocked is really good for the money.

5870 is a great card but is last gen now
470 is an amazing overclocker if you don't mind the power consumption/heat
6870 non OC is on par with non OC 470 and OC is >5870

I have very little experience in overclocking Graphics cards. I have only ever overclocked cpus. I have played around with the ati overdrive tool a while back where in the ati utility you can bump up the frequency of the card using the software utility.

If I were to get the gtx 470, how would I go about overclocking it and would I need to buy an aftermarket HSF for it or would the stock cooler allow for an overclock.

I am using a 750watt thermaltake toughpower, that should be plenty for the overclocked 470 right?

msi afterburner, or evga precision.

your psu is plenty.

Aftermarket heatsink only good for temps and noise and a slighltly higher overclock.

Had a little Google of both of them. Had never heard of them. I have never really been a gamer before so never had a great need for overclocking graphics cards etc. Thank's for all the advice. Great help.

5850 is getting much cheaper to compete with 6870, runs much cooler than any 470

2 times 5850 in the futre is like a 5970 woo hoo
