ATI 5850 vs Nvidia GTX 460

How about buying 2nd hand 4870 for around 40-50? Will give you a decent boost over 8800gtx and tide you over until full upgrade.

Remember that there should be 69xx series and 560/570 out by January so if ur going to use ur gpu to its full potential now, later the prices will be cheaper and there might be a lot better options as well.

I'd like to see who swapped a 5850 out for a 460. Bizarre move to make.

As mentioned above the 6870 is around the same level of performance, (and from what I've seen my conclusion would be that the 6870 is better. But they are pretty close.

I swapped a 5850 for a 460 and wouldn't swap back if you paid me. 2-3 times the performance in DiRT & GTA IV. Considerably faster in Mafia 2, F1 2010 and NWN2, first card I've ever had that never judders in Titan Quest.

2-3x performance in Dirt 2?

I get 50fps+ average at stock clocks on highest settings (max AA and AF) for 1920*1080.

Something must have been very wrong with your 5850.

To the OP - all great cards and basically worth their money - so just decide how much you want to pay, and you wont be disappointed. Simples :)

1) I never said DiRT 2, I was talking about DiRT 1, though fps is around 20fps higher on DiRT 2 on the 460. (around 90 as opposed to around 70). We're talking 75+ on DiRT 1 now compared with 35-40 on the 5850

2) LOL all you want but I'm telling the truth.

3) Titan Quest may be getting on a bit and has run at 60fps+ for some time now. However it has a nasty habit of "rubber-banding" where the game stutters badly in places for a few seconds until it catches up then it's fine again for a bit. Also certain fx like fire/smoke ran badly on all previous hardware. The rubber banding does not exist on the 460

4) Not sure what was up with GTA IV but it ran at 15-20 fps on the 5850 as opposed to 45 ish on the 460

5) I have no particular reason to doubt the 5850 I had other than it didn't seem to like certain games very much. On most other things there isn't much of a difference fps wise.

6) My 460 is clocked to 850/2000

Yeah zytok I must admit your sale for the ATI 5850 a while back which you say was to change to a GTX 460, did puzzle me, but I have also seen others do this as well. Now that you have explained I can somewhat understand.
