Basically my wife has a provisional licence and she asked me if it would be legal to drive with passengers as well as me in the car.

For example we have 2 kids - can they come in the car

We have a friend that may help her and boost her confidence, could she sit in the back with us etc etc?

Cheers

IANAL But I believe it is allowed. The important things are:

1) The main passenger must have held a full licence for a few years (can't remember how many).
2) Insurance.

Also something people often forget - the supervising passenger must also be compos mentis, so no getting the wife to give you a lift home from the pub when you're plastered!

Do they have to be under the limit, i remember a story in the local paper where the instructor and pupil went for a pub lunch and had drinks. Both were over the limit but only the driver got done.

The supervising person has to give their full concentration just like if they were driving instead. This means you can't be sitting there texting on your phone while supervising the learner.

Am I correct in thinking that the 'main passenger' has to have insurance for the car too? Be it a named driver or the policy holder, or covered under their own DOC if their insurance has it?

yep, they have to be able to take over if required.

Absolutely true but no requirement that the person who has held the license for 3 years has even set eyes on a car let alone driven one them self since passing their test. Typical bonkers law.
No. They need to be able to legally drive the car themselves.
