Hi I need to upgrade my car I have a Dahatsiu Sirion 1.0 09 plate we are expecting a new baby so need to get a bigger car as you can see not bothered by speed or what not just function and economy.

I have never driven an automatic car and have seen a citreon xsara picaso that is quite reasonably priced but its an automatic.

Tell me about auto's as I'm clueless ( reliability? etc)

what would you suggets grand scenic/scenic or citreon xsara picaso or zafari look in my price range which is around 5 or 6k depending what i get more my car.

Small engined automatics = absolutely no.

Just buy a manual. But you don't need to buy a crappy Citroen van with windows just because you've got a baby. It's a baby not an elephant. All the junk you probably don't even need will fit fine in a hatchback with a reasonable decent boot, such as a Focus.

With Fox here. You dont need a van for a baby. The Ford Focus would be an excellent car to get.

I kid you not them Picasso things drive ok and have bundles of room and a nice high driving poition.

not just a baby

1* baby
1* 2 year old
1* 7 year old

:)

You don't need a car you need a Vasectomy. :D

Also Fox is right, Don't get a bread van especially a Citroen, All Citreons are crap which is more than an Interweb fact.

Automatics are perfectly reasonable, even in small engined cars, these days - if all you want is a motor that shuttles you from A to B. And they are a fraction easier to motor around in, but you'll pay for it in performance and fuel economy. They're a bit less reliable too, and you'll likely pay more for the car in the first place.

Get a manual.

No, not at all. You say these days like a Xsara Picasso, a car that appeared over 10 years ago, is going to have some some sort of cutting edge gearbox in it!

But no one buys them for a cutting edge anything do they, i really dont think its a bad choice for this chap.

I've driven a small auto (10 year old 1.4 civic) and TBH, it was no more horrible than the manual version, other than having rubbish economy, this was a traditional auto with a torque converter.

Common now on small engines are "robotized" manual gearboxes, which are very efficient, but very rubbish, think letting your 7 year old change gear for you.

Be honest who gives a **** what the gear change is like, i think those Picasso things are a mile in front of anything else for that money when it comes to space and general usability.

You aint got to like this sort of car, its just there to do a job. You aint even got to spend any money on them 3k gets you a good one.

I drive a Ford Galaxy Diesel with an auto and before that had an auto Saab 9-5, which was my first auto. I don't think I'll ever go back to a manual now.

With 3 kids in the back all asking constantly asking random questions having an auto makes journeys that little bit easier :)

I'm sure the perfromance figures I checked for the Galaxy and Saab showed they were just as economical as the manuals !

It's not as simple as to say all small engine autos are crap. A Picasso isn't going to be purchased to be the best at anything. Its autobox is absolutely fine. Who cares if it's not the fastest or the smoothest...certainly not this buyer.

Fox always spouts this 'Small engine auto? No.' nonsense. As though the manual equivalent is, by contrast, just so fantastic and cutting edge.

If you don't want to have to change gear, just try the auto then decide if it's somehow just so absolutely unsuited to ferrying kids around, like an advanced gearchange tech is required for that...?!

Never driven an auto is it easy to adjust to automatic cars? I am somebody who doesn't really enjoy driving and my mileage is low I had the sirion 18mths and have done 7300Miles :)

Its easy just use 1 foot, the right foot, forget the left one.

Remember they creep forward without the accelerator in traffic, just hold it on the foot brake.

The auto gearbox in the new Grand Picasso is utterly terrible.

I have: 1*3 year old, 1*6 year old and 1*8 year old, and we all manage fine in the RS 250. Although now that #4 in en route I'll have to have a rethink.

:)

Never seen the issue with needing a "big" car with lots of kids, unless you're the sort of parent that needs to pack enough kit for a trip up Everest every time you go to Asda.

With respect Fox, we had a 2 ltr auto Scenic for 5 years and it was fine. I haven't got a clue why you would want a manual in a car like that. It's a people carrier, not a sports car.
