Virgin Media - Latency issues over last few months? Post here

Ping tests are useless at this time, I've been watching it for a month now and know it like the back of my hand.

Retest at around 5PM when everyone starts coming on, watch the degrade till 6pm onwards where it becomes virtually unusable for gaming.

Right now I'm getting 30ms with 15ms jitter 0% packetloss, going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Ping tests are useless at this time

Well l'm on SkyUnlimited l use a ping tool, no matter what time l ping bbc.co.uk l get 31ms, only now and again my ping goes up to 36ms.

My mate has had this prob for week's, he ring's up "your line is fine", using Ventrilo his ping goes upto 600. Virgin are not updating the exchange equipment to handle the the extra load[new user's] so until they upgrade the exchange you's are going to suffer.:(

Ping tests are useless for VM customers, other networks will probably be fine... this whole thread is related to VM, not sky! And yes you are correct about the exchanges, tons of post on that forum end with a guy saying "OH IT APPEARS YOUR LOCAL ROUTER IS FUBAR DURING PEAK TIMES (BECAUSE WE DIDNT DO OUR JOB AND MAP THE BANDWIDTH USAGE AND CAPABILITY OF OUR EQUIPMENT) SO WE WILL BE FIXING IT SOON".

I will hold out hope until 6-7PM, if its fixed then my moaning may have paid off. I have all of their phone calls recorded, along with one of their staff offering the worst advice ever then hanging up, so its off to watchdog / ofcom if this isn't sorted soon.

Ok, Thanks OLDPHART for the ping tester.

I have been having one or two issues of late, freezing internet pages (OCUK & my Share BB's iii ect)
And Very often in games I am getting huge lag spikes and disconnections, this is playing around 6pm till around 10pm.

I have done the ping checker and here are my usual results

Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138] with 32 bytes of data:

However now and again I get this message:

Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138] with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out. Status = 11010

I have checked my area on the VM forums and nothing is out, except the TV (which is plugged into the same socket as my Internet connection)

https://my.virginmedia.com/service-status/results

I have also followed the VM forum help guidelines:

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5...Problems-Read-this-checklist-first/td-p/43763

And downloading two files simultaneously from Gamershell gave results:

File 1: 350Kb/s
File 2: 1.9 Mb/s

They say to add these together but not what is acceptable??

I have run the their recommended speedtest at 15:33 today and I was getting 12 Meg download, I am paying for 20meg...although I realise this is often not achievable.

Will test at peak times to see what affects this has.

Oh, I am running through a router, Lynksys WRT54GS but it makes no difference if I have the internet directly into the PC, still get these issues, which I why I suspect VM

Anyone got any view ? / comments?

The download numbers there are fine. On a 10Mbit line I cap out at around 1.1MB/s on downloads. Therefore you should get double that. Which you do.
http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/demos/ is a good test since this is inside VM and not subject to factors outside of the network. But if VM advise gamershell then it should be fine to use that one.

You should properly run without the router for a bit too. I know you say you have tested it but a quick 5 mins of 'oh yeah it's still broke' or 'I'm on the router but put myself in the DMZ' isn't the same.

What is your upload speed on this test? http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

hi, thanks for the reply, through my router I get:
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1290107304&v=11415916

Which seems fine, but I think I am getting intermitent drops, full disconnections from games and freezing web pages.

I take my words back. Not fixed... it actually looks like it has got worse, now getting disconnected from teamspeak constantly and ping has doubled in last 30 minutes.

HELLO!

Had problems on and off for around a year now.

Post here.

I also have a bunch of other posts on that forum from problems I've had last year and this year.

HAHAHHA. I've done a pathPing and my suspicions have been confirmed, holy mother of GOD what the hell have they done to the network.

New PathPing

Look at the amount of packet loss!!! Total of over 7% in their internal network.

A major hub must have gone down, this is so widespread its not funny, the fact they are giving NO information is a worry.

Back on the phone now... lets see what good this crap will do.

Wow solution is TURN OFF UR MODEM FOR 10 MINUTES. By god they must be very clever over there, I guess it will fix the following issue at 5 of THEIR nodes.

I am going to BURN this company with trading standards and OFCOM until I get an explanation that is actually from someone of a technical nature, not someone who struggles with the concept of "ping" or "latency" on the other end of the phone in india.

well, tonight I have had the final straw...I kept noticing that the "orange Cisco" light on my router (WRT54GS) kept going out, then coming back on again.
so thinking the router was at fault for all my disconnection problems in game, I disconnected it and ran straight from the VM cable modem, which is the little black one everyone has.

My 20 Meg Broadband connection is recorded as 7 Meg....how wonderful...NOT:mad:

And this is using the linked speed checker from the VM forum help site...so you think they have faith in the readings (I know some speed checkers are not reliable)

SO...I will be phoning VM up and asking if I can have a 50% reduction in my bill, as I am getting only 50% of my paid service !:(

Ok guys, things are kicking off on the VM forums, so many people are angry now... I've already posted to watchdog as has many others, here is a post a user made.

I have already had one topic deleted (within only about 15 minutes of it being created) which shows the magnitude of this situation...

If you are suffering high pings in your area and have been told it is due to overutilisation of the UBR's, then this message is for you.

I have been suffering this problem since Novemeber 2009, and have been given fix date after fix date since Novemeber onwards. None of them have been adhered to, and I've noticed many people in different areas are being given the exact same fix dates despite being at a different end to the country. It comes across to me, and many other users that they are throwing dates at us to simply keep us off their back and be content knowing that this supposed 'fix date' is only a few weeks away. Afterall, that's not that far away is it? Yes... it is when it's been going on for over a year.

They are not willing to upgrade their servers, and they are even more unwilling to admit the problem to the public. The fact my previous topic about this got deleted so soon shows exactly that. They are scared that their company is going to be put under investigation soon for this.

They are oversubscribed, yet they still have the nerve to put adverts on telly advertising 'the fastest broadband speeds' despite many towns across the country being overpopulated beyond belief. There are plenty of reasons to file a complaint:

To get our problems sorted
To stop people who are mislead by Virgins advertising joining up for a service they'll regret paying money for
To stop overutilising our servers EVEN MORE than they already are. This problem will just get worse and worse the longer it goes on.

Please, go to Watchdog and file a complaint, otherwise this problem will never be looked into by an outside organisation, and Virgin Media will continue to feed us lies. They are unwilling to admit the problem to the public, they are unwilling to upgrade our servers despite the money they are making, but it's amazing how quick and willing they are to hide up anything that speaks badly of them eh?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/gotastory/

Put subject as : Computers and Communications, and then the following box as Internet service provider, and get complaining people. This NEEDS to get sorted out because it won't get fixed otherwise, and people NEED to know of the problem going on before they stupidly sign up.

Join in the fun, enough complaints will hopefully get a response out of this dam company! While this user who posted the above seems to be spamming the forum a lot, I can't disagree that VM are not giving answers to ANYTHING but excuses about your UBR being under heavy load, we might look at it in 3-4 months... not acceptable at all, on top of that India / VM Forums / VM Support all seem to be somewhat disconnected leading to problems being described over and over wasting time.

I'm on fibre, not ADSL... been with them 10 years and connection has always been fab, I'm willing to fight tbh.

Anyone on VIRGIN with these issues, please submit to watchdog, doesn't mean you have to be on TV lol, I'll be doing it just to provide information.

Jesus, my 10Mbps Virgin is rubbish at the moment. Max speed test I get is 4Mbps with about 300k download (was 1.2Mbps), my upload however is 1Mbps.

But what have you done to my download, I'm not being throttled as I haven't downloaded anything.

Newsgroup downloads from Virgin are shocking, I used to get 1200kbps a few weeks ago, but now I'm lucky to get 300Kbps and it's connected/disconnected/connected.

:/
