I am feeling disheartened for the human race today.

Many of the possible future technologies I have been looking forward to, though theoretically possible, rely on a way to have MASSIVE amounts of energy in a very small place. We have some very plausible theories on time travel into the future, less so into the past, projected energy weapons, galactic space travel, the ability to get to Australia in under an hour, scientists have even began laying the foundations for transporting matter, though I believe it was only an atom, they did it and it was a start. Tough they can theorize and speculate until their hearts are content, without the massive energy these things require they can never hope to achieve them.

My hope was antimatter. An antimatter generator might get one quite happily over to other galaxy’s however it was reported yesterday that scientists’ do not think this will ever be a possibility in any future they can see.

When you twin that with the nothing can go faster than light rule I guess we are stuck here and besides the odd medical advance or new way to watch telly this is pretty much as far as we are going to go.

Could be worse - just remember there are more wonderful things to see and do in this world than any one person can possibly do in their lifetime. Stick with them :D

...this is pretty much as far as we are going to go.

What a load of crap.

For hundreds of years scientists and academics have said we're at the peak and there is nothing left blah blah blah. You just have to look at the last 50 years to see how wrong they are, never mind the last 200.

Crossing galaxies or transporting matter may never happen in our lifetimes, but it is pretty small-minded, arrogant and just plain depressing to assume "this is it".

I was hoping for people to start telling sceintists have done this or descoverd that or looking into blah...

I wanted some new information on new dreams to dream. Not negative banter.

I think if countries didn't spend trillions and trillions on weapons and wars maybe we could have discovered how to not age etc but instead humanity is infantile...

You might not be able to travel faster than the speed of light but bending space and time to move vast distances by using wormholes may be possible in the distant future and there'd be no need for FTL travel :p

yes but you still need incredible energy. Like triple the consumption of the whole world in a room no bigger than a large living room. An antimatter generator was kinda the only hope for that.

Why would you need so much energy to travel through a wormhole that's already there in space?

Obviously this implies that wormholes exist in the universe that we have not found in our observable universe yet but Einstein set the foundation for this anyway with special relativity and it's dubbed an "Einstein-Rosen bridge".

New physics models will need to be understood though, physics that do not and cannot exist with current models (like how new ones for black holes are needed too because general and special relativity do not apply to a singularity).

Wormholes are not a practical proposition, something to do with radiation. I saw a show on it, and apparantly scentists tend to think warping space-time is a more realistic proposal. Mario thingy, the grey haird chinese scientist whos presents a lot of these shows seemed to think warp drives and antimatter generators were a prospect.

you mean Michio Kaku

oh, and he's japanese-american ;)

Either way, whatever does become reality in the future it will be running on physics we currently do not understand today. It would be like discovering the Atom all over again, maybe, on that day in the future :p

Hey, we can travel into the future, we should find out!

But first we need one of 2 things:

1: A vessel that can travel at close to light speed and circle the Earth hundreds of times at that speed.

2: A supermassive object near us in space that we can orbit a few times, this would have the same effect as near FTL without needing to travel at those speeds since time slows down for people on board in either situation!

Actually, its probably the reverse. Wars stimulate technology and increase the rate of discovery.
