I picked up a second hand Alienware monitor off the members market last week, primarily for the 120hz refresh.

Since buying, my 5850 is not really up to job of playing everyhing at 120fps, and as my cards a wee bit long in the tooth, i thought id treat myself and get a GTX580.

Im not 2/3 of the way to 3d goodness, is it worth the money though, an extra £120 on top of what ive spent, does it give headaches, sickness etc when playing?

Can you then use this kit to watch 3d bluray's also?

If you set the 3d depth too far I find I start to feel ill and develop a headache. Other than that I don't have any real issue apart from the minor one of reduced contrast which you can't avoid with the glasses.

You can watch 3d BR if you have the right software, a BR drive and of course some 3d content.

I'll be honest with you, there isn't that much good 3d content out right now. Monsters vs Aliens is brilliant in 3d and well worth it though. Also I find myself to busy wrapped up in being amazed at 3d to play games properly so if your play style is anything other than casual then you might want to tone the '3dness' down or off completely.

What's the point of buying 120ghz monitor if you don't have 3D kit :p you r half way there, I'd recommend getting it! Totally different experience in gaming and watching movies!

The point is to have a 120Hz monitor that has many other benefits beside 3D.

120Hz monitors are not here because of 3D, 3D is here because of 120Hz monitors.

I've always wondered, since a 120Hz Monitor is needed, is it possible to use a CRT? Wheren't you able to overclock them to 120Hz or something?

While the effect is decent and most people adapt to it without any issues, theres a shortage of decent 3D material to use it with - very limited choice of movies and while most games work ok only some really work great - and once the novelty wears off on the balance of probability you probably won't use it for gaming either - for most people it is certainly not the logical step forward for gaming.

You'd be back to the old 60Hz flicker issue on CRTs which does give headaches, etc. as it uses the 120Hz to feed 60Hz to each eye.
