Student protest today - spec me a sign

scorza... there's nothing stopping anyone from studying in their own time and at their own leisure and discovering the secrets of the universe.

So there we have it, the death of Science and the Arts in the UK. In OCUK land, Stephen Hawking wouldn't be one of the world's greatest minds - he'd be one of the world's richest bankers.

Would it affect any of you?

If you mean will it affect us, as we're first years currently, then nope it won't.

If you mean would it have affected our choice to come to University (if we weren't there yet), then nope it wouldn't have. We all recognized that if we want a degree we have to pay for it. Selfish to expect someone else to pay for our choice.

What? That's literally the opposite of what I said. I'd be quite happy to force feed the bankers all of this useless cotton money we have or don't have.

This thread is depressing me, it would appear that the Tories have already won - education is already a commodity to be invested in through debt for potentially limitless rewards later :( Whatever happened to learning for the sake scientific advancement, to understand the past, to study the great works of mankind? It would seem that in future all that will be on offer will be financial degrees (if you can afford it) with an advertising slogan of "98% of graduates from this course go on to be investment bankers". What future is there for the study of History, Art or English Literature?

Sadly there arent many students today who learn for the sake of scientific advancement, to understand the past or to study the great works of mankind. Many students today learn in order to get a higher paid job in order to make more money to buy faster cars and bigger houses. Thats not the fault of the Tories, thats the fault of society as a whole.

Indeed. It ultimately depends on how you measure success, some seek to cure a disease, help people and so on, some seek to make as much money as possible. There is nothing wrong with either of these, but we need a balance of these types of people in our society and I guess at the moment we're not quite balanced.

But you can still do all of that. What exactly is stopping someone from doing any of the above with the new system? It actually makes it easier to do that with the current system. If you take a degree in Art, become a painter and never really make a living out of it then the degree will have cost you nothing at all. As you don't start paying it back until you start earning over £21k where exactly is the issue?

I see they are moaning about EMA too... I went to college to learn stuff, not so I could get free money for booze...

The point is that you'd get a better return on your investment studying a degree that will lead to a career in the financial services industry. Why would you saddle yourself with £30k+ worth of debt to study say, Theoretical Physics when statistically you'll probably spend the rest of your life paying it off with a poorly paid research job at a University. You said that subjects like Theoretical Physics should be reduced to hobby learning and not proper academic study.

Yes unfortunately our society places so much emphasis on fame and wealth now, be that by being on X-factor, hooking up with a celebrity, being charged with murder or being filmed throwing bricks at police vans. Its driven into youth at an alarming rate, resulting in more teens wanting to be a wag than wanting to be a scientist. Pity really, but thats the way it is, we're more a hedonistic nation than an enlightened nation currently.

That's what was great about studying mathematics. The majority were there because they loved maths.
