The stock answer to this question always used to be the Eagle F1 GSD3, but I can't find them anywhere...

If you value wet grip above price / wear rate, what's best in this size now?

The KU31's i have got seem to be ok, haven't had any problems in the wet and got plenty of grip in the dry. Although i have nothing to compare it against.

If price isn't an issue go for some CONTINENTAL PREMIUMCONTACT 2's from camskill, only £45 each. T1-r's are £29 and KU-31's £39 each on the same site in that size.

The Toyos are exceptional value in this size

I noticed the T1-Rs were cheap, and I remember them from when I had my Rover, I just wasn't sure if they were any good in the wet?

Same story with FK452s and KU31s, people seem to quote their vfm, but the consensus seems to be that if they fall behind Eagle F1s etc anywhere, it's wet grip...

SWMBO is much more likely to need wet grip than dry, and I'd rather keep her out of someone's boot / a hedge due to standing water or whatever.

I noticed the "PremiumContacts" & Goodyear "EfficientGrip" but I wasn't sure if that was the model of choice for those more interested in wear rates than grip?

GF's old 55 reg fester went from premium contacts to KU31s and the kumhos were far better in the wet and dry.

Also, I've never actually used the internet for tyre shopping (I usually get a nearby garage to get close for conveinience). What happens when you order from Camskill? They drop 4 tyres at your front door? Then find a fitter?

no, her contis were no where near the indicators.

put it this way, she is a girl and even she commented on how much more fun the car became

What's the car they are going on?

I thought the general concensus was the Toyos were good because they were cheap, not that they were an amazing tyre just that they offered good value? Have heard the Toyos have poor wear rates and wet performance is naff.

I always used Michelin PE2s on the Clio in this size, lasted ages (20k+ out of a set) and gave great performance.

Downside was at the time they were about £50 a corner compared to £30ish for the Toyos.

Looks like at the moment the Toyos are £29 a corner, which is damn cheap, PE2s are £51, prices from Camskill.

Hankook RS2.

The name summer tyre actually means 'better than racing slicks and also beats studded tyres in the snow'

:D

The 2010 EVO tyre review suggests that the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo is quite good in the wet. The same test also puts the KU31 as being pants. But then Camskill is putting the T1R at £30 per corner inc vat!

Edit- the S1 Evo is only an extra £5 though.

Given the fact that tyres in the 195/50/15 size are so cheap why not spend the extra and get proper premium tyres rather than getting a set of "Meh" ones like T1Rs?
