Who will ditch 580 for 6900

Are you like this on purpose ?

Right i shall explain this scenario.

Dave has had a 5870 for a year now, likes his gaming but does not spend his life on the internet..He also likes to go out interacting with the opposite sex and things like that.
Just by chance he is checking Ocuk one night to buy some media to burn his norp to when he sees a banner for the new 6870.
Dave has had a bit of overtime in this month and thinks i am going to treat myself to this new GFX card as the banner states the new 68** series, so he buys a 6870 thinking he is getting an upgrade.

Bosh, marketing perfection.

Can you ask Dave if he would like to buy my old Radeon 9700 - as a friend of a friend he can have a special price! :D

Bosh, marketing perfection.

But an upgrade usually cost's more. Is Dave that thick that he thinks he will be getting a boost in performance when his 5870 card is on ocuk for 50 quid more?

What does Dave do with his 5870? does he sell it?

Did Dave not get tipped off by the price?

If Dave owned a 1 year old BMW 1 series and saw a 15 year old 3 series on a garage forecourt would Dave also think he was getting an upgrade? Seeing as Dave apparently only looks at the number in the product name.

EDIT: I'm thinking Dave might want to take up Console gaming :D

No he kept it to use for PhysX ;)

Dave as i said does not care as it was a year ago and does not give much though as to why he saved some money this time. He maybe thought since AMD took over they were kinder than ATI.

How is that even remotely comparable?

Its like Dave bought a top of the line BMW for say £49,000 in 2008 in 2010 he sees the "latest and greatest" just released at £45,000......

Dave has had a 480 for a year now, likes his gaming but does not spend his life on the internet..He also likes to go out interacting with the opposite sex and things like that.

He posts in the GFX section and realises people who have overclocked their 480's have basically a stock 580 without spending £450

The scenario could have well been Dave buys a HD6870 for £169 sell HD5870 on the bay for £280 only to find he's actually got a bargain.

But Dave sounds more of a HD5770 type of guy to me :p

Atleast he got a faster card, its much harder to swallow when you end up downgrading for extra money.

Yup and by calling it a 485 he would not have had this issue, again marketing done to perfection... The only slight problem i am worried about is how did Dave get his 480 a year ago :D

Oh i dunno, he had a 480 a year ago so he is doing something right!

Anyway lets leave poor dave here, he is out of pocket enough ;)

Its not really a downgrade though is it?

What did Dave do with his 5870? Did he sell it? For £220 at auction?

If he did and bought a 6870 on release day he is quids in. He has the same performance has before but a no longer EOL part with better scaling temps noise and heat and enough money for a free night out. :p

How would Dave know that AMD took over from ATI? I don't think he keeps track of graphics card related stuff.

How is that even remotely comparable?

Its like Dave bought a top of the line BMW for say £49,000 in 2008 in 2010 he sees the "latest and greatest" just released at £45,000......

Because BMWs have numbers in their names. Duh!
Since Dave doesn't read up or do anything other than look at the number in the name before spending his money on something I don't suppose he'd bother looking to see what age it was.

Look it's late and this whole conversation has become pointless and off topic (and easyrider was being accused of trolling!) why does it matter if my examples are remotely comparable?
Everyone has their opinions, I don't think anyone is going to change their mind about the naming convention thing anyway. Or are you saying that if I'd picked a slightly better example you'd change you mind about the whole thing?

6870 isn't quite as fast as the 5870 overall, its faster in some stuff and slower in others... your assuming he sold the old card and got a good price for it too.
