Taxing online

Car tax is up at the end of the month, haven't yet had a reminder so went onto the site and put in the reg and v5 number, but got this:

Unable to Use Service

Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN using this service.

You will need to apply for the tax disc or declare SORN at a licence-issuing Post Office® or DVLA Local Office (as applicable for the vehicle) using the reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Document/Certificate together with the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note, MOT Test Certificate/GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee.

What's up with that? I've had the v5 since June, insurance is valid till march. Not applied for any changes to anything... Obviously I'll get to a post office, but it seems a bit odd

I think i had that message when i tried to tax a car too early once.

Ring the DVLA - they'll tell you why you cannot tax online.

Uuuuuuurgh that sounds like fun. Is the DVLA call centre as bad as I expect?

I think 4 days might actually be too late to do it online. I know when my gf forgot about hers I had to go up the post office because it was too close to the deadline.

They were fine when I used them last year after my car was incorrectly marked as CAT C. It was the insurance company that had made the mistake that were a nightmare!

I taxed mine at 11:30pm the night before :/ and my dad had to tax his 3 days after as his insurance renewal was being done over the weekend and he wasn't added to the MID in time... So that shouldn't be it :/

Well this was interesting, as far as the DVLA was concerned my car hasn't been taxed since may :eek:

Did the vehicle check on the DVLA site, which confirmed what the lady in the post office said. The tax disc I had was put in by the dealer, looks perfectly legit, stamped by a post office in Newport which is where I bought the car.

So not sure if it was an administrative cockup or something more sinister. Lucky I haven't been pulled over! Woman in the post office said I might be contacted by the DVLA with a query, so I've kept the old disc and I've still got the invoice for the car showing it was dome by the dealer....whatever the explanation was!

Explains why I never had a reminder, but at least it's sorted now
