PS3 - Who is right?

Had an argument with my flatmate about the PS3.

Basically I pushed the eject button at the menu of GT5 and he went absolutely ballistic. He was claiming that pushing the power/eject button at any time can run the risk of corrupting the game - and that the ONLY way to turn off a PS3 is to select 'Shutdown System' in the menu.

My argument was that unless you pushed the mains flicker at the back of the PS3 you wouldn't do any damage. When you push the eject button a CD drive on a PC, you can hear the disk spinning down before it ejects. I tried to point out that there would be safety measures to stop the disk from being accessed before it is ejected. Likewise on the front power button, I'm sure there would be some sort of safety guard that safely halts the programme in operation before shutting down the PS3.

Anyway who is right?

You I believe. If you ejected or hit the On/Off button on the front then that shouldn't do any damage whatsoever. The PS3 will no doubt have some form of procedure that once the On/Off button is pressed, it stops what it is doing and goes through the Power down procedure. That's why the HDD indicator flashes just before turning off completely. It goes through the stages. It's not like you're pulling out the power cable.

How can it corrupt the game? The data is on the disc, there's no way to modify it, and as you've said the drive will stop the disc before it ejects. The only time it'd be potentially disastrous is if you ejected the disc or turned off the console whilst the game is saving, installing or otherwise accessing the HDD. Ejecting the disc tends to automatically quit the game anyway.

Turning it off with the button on the front is no different to using the menu. It shuts down properly either way.

Pushing the power button makes the ps3 do a proper shut down, worse you'll loose is game progress since the last save.

Using the power/eject button is the time tested way to shut down a console, so you are right.

Christ, I remember changing games by just hitting the "eject" button on the PS1 and stopping the disc spinning with my fingers, none of this sissy shutting down :D

Ditto. "I ain't got time to wait for that ****!"

OP: Next time he has a hissy fit about it, scream "DO YOU WANNA SEE SOMETHING THAT'LL BREAK THE ******* PS3?!?!?" and punt it across the room. That'll learn 'im.

Hmm, not sure to be honest. Agreed, that why would sony allow you to eject the disc like that?! But, to be on the safe side I always quit the game first before powering off the system. Why risk it?

When you press the off button the PS3 shuts down properly, like when you shutdown windows on a PC.
The only way to risk corruption is the switch it off at the back when it's in the middle of HDD access.

Your friend needs to stop being so precious about his PS3!

Ur right only time you can cause any corruption is ejecting or switching of during a save, i miss the good old days of PS1 aswell, i remember if a game crashed you could sometimes get it going again by opening it cleaning disc spinning it and popping lid closed, also games like destruction derby where you took dic out and put music cd in to have your own music while racing.

Yep, hit the eject switch, lid popd up, stop disc, insert new game, close lid, hit reset.

But what can happen is that GT5 is propably autosaving all the time, if you power off when it's saving you might corrupt the save, ejecting the game when the PS3 is reading will produce an error most likely.

Snap, and my PS1 still works fine

As above really, you are right
but if the game is saving you have a chance of corrupting the save (hence the warning 'do not turn the console off while this icon shows' type thing at the start of every game :P)

You'll notice a moments pause before it actually shuts off. That pause is essentially the PS3 making sure there's nothing mid process. inorder to avoid corrupt cache. This is my personal guess btw. But it seems logical

Pressing the eject is exactly the same as selecting quit game via the psn menu only difference is the tray opening.

You are right. How else are you supposed to do it?

You wont even corrupt it if its saving, it doesnt access the disk during saving, thats all done in memory.

These are like the fundamental tests they go through, or they have pass, to be released.
