Hoping the kind well travelled folks around here can help me out with a few idea's. Had a plan for a long weekend down in London next weekend to celebrate me and my girlfriends 3rd anniversary of being together. I've just been looking at the prices and for a semi-decent hotel within 5 miles of the city centre i'm easily looking at around £250-£350 for both nights. That doesn't include what we'd be spending on meals and doing stuff :)

I did a quick search on Lastminute and it seems for around £300-£450 I can get a weekend break in Paris, Barcelona, Rome and the like.

What i'm asking is for some idea's of a good place to go. It's from Friday AM to Sunday PM then back to work 7AM Monday morning. Needs to be either a direct train/flight on Friday morning returning at some point during sunday afternoon/evening.

We're pretty easy going, would like somewhere where there's a lot to see, where you can just wander around and see the sights. We're not good with languages, well i'm not, English is my girlfriends second language which she speaks fluently but doesn't speak anything else apart from her native tongue. So we'd really like somewhere we can get by on English and a bit of an attempt at some local basics like please's and thankyou's. Somewhere where they can see you make a bit of an effort and help you out.

I've done Rome before and hated the attitude, I was trying my hardest to speak a bit of Italian and it felt like either no one actually spoke English or they just liked watching me struggle. :)

Also with any suggestions, can you please give me some idea's of things to do in said cities.

So, hit me with your idea's please :D

I'd take her & yourself to a German city as the Christmas markets all kick off this weekend & are on up 'til Xmas eve.

Guess I emphasised the english speaking bit too much. It's not the be all and end all, would also like some information of things to do in the suggested cities :)

Go to Brugge. I'm off there tomorrow for the Christmas Markets and it's a stunning little place. Easy to get to via Eurostar (trains from Brussels to Brugge), fairly cheap and should fit nicely in your budget. Check it out.

tbh I think what you've found on lastminute is what your generally going to get. Barcelona is my wifes favourite spot to visit of all the places we've been to in Europe, there is a heck of a lot you can do there.

Rome !!! (I got back last night)

Krakow, Poland.

Got back from a weekend two weeks ago.

Flights were £40 return and the apartment only 75m from the main square was £40 per night for a 7 bed apartment!

The apartment was great and the city is beautiful and almost everybody on the trip (a stag do) said they would retunr next year for a weekend break with the gf's/wives.

The apartments were called Pergamin Apartments http://www.booking.com/hotel/pl/per...71112060;ws=&gclid=CMWHsMmzv6UCFY4e4Qodty-DZA

Used booking.com for them (great site for hotels/apartments

For £250 to £350 you could have your flights and full 5 star luxury and still have spending money (pints are £1.50 each, vodka is cheap and comes in many varieties, loads to see - salt mines, schindlers factory, old jewish quarter, death camps etc, everybody seems to speak english)

5 star stuff here:

450 zlotys = £100

They have a nice smaller apartment with a balcony overlooking the square but this tends to get booked up first.

We booked with a week to go and massive reductions available. We almost went for the luxury 5 star hotel which was only £80 per night for a twin/double room (usually £220 per night) as it's off season and late booking.

:( lol, at least she wouldn;t have a problem with the language.

Shame, cause it's a great place to visit.

Anyway, as a well seasoned traveller who has done two or three weekends away every year, ex eastern block countries are you best bet in my opinion and all are different and beautiful.

eg

Riga, Latvia,
Tallin, Estonia
Llubjana, Slovenia
Budapest, Hungary

etc

But being Polish she may not want to visit any of those though :(

I'd go with this. Been to Krakow quite a few times and it really is a special place. It's like Prague without the sleaze.

I got back from Bruges a few weeks ago and couldn't believe the prices. The earlier post saying things were fairly cheap made me laugh. Check out the portion of chips for £3, or £3.50 if sauce is required.

Anywhere that has the Euro is going to be pretty expensive.

Ive been around Europe a bit the last 18 months, and my favourite place has probably been Nice.

You can get cheap flights with Easyjet, the city is not too big so you can just walk around, you can go on top of this hill to see a view of the whole city which is pretty cool, you can walk by the beach, and can catch a bus to Monaco/Monte Carlo, there are also loads of other places nearby to visit.

I went last January with the GF, stayed in Ibis hotel, had a greattt time!

We went Amsterdam soon after, which was also really good, but a different type of fun ;)
