Anyone here used Diaspora, it's been branded as the Facebook killer due to increased security and greater user control over their personal data ?

Website here

Social networking site Diaspora, which aims to be the Facebook of the open source world, has opened its doors to a limited number of users in an attempt to iron out the final bugs before a full launch.

The service, which has been in development for quite some time, began as a response to perceived privacy issues with Facebook - in particular, the company's terms and conditions that give it complete rights over all your personal data and the inability to remove your user account completely from the site.

Diaspora, by contrast, is based around the premise of giving its users full control over their personal data at all times. In the words of the site's founders, 'you own your pictures, and you shouldn’t have to give that up just to share them. You maintain ownership of everything you share on Diaspora, giving you full control over how it's distributed.'

i check back on their site about once a month and it's all nice to hear what they're doing but don't think it'll be anything amazing. one simple reason is the name is something that'll confuse the masses

Whilst is is technically "better" than Facebook, I don't see it toppling them. Facebook are humongous. So astronomically huge that they are going to remain the top for a very long time. More internet traffic goes through Facebook than through Google.

People will stick to Facebook just because it's Facebook without realising just how bad it is. I was quite disappointed that Google Wave died off

just to check you aren't getting confused with google buzz which is still going? if not then i'm lost as to what wave has to do with facebook

No I was referring to Google Wave

Google Wave is a web-based computing platform and communications protocol, designed to merge key features of media like e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking.

Yeah, i keep promoting it and checking back on it... it's good to have an alternative, especially given how microblogging (Twitter) has plenty of options available. I'd really love it to succeed, but you've got to ask - how many people are going to go through to trouble of downloading it, downloading all the dependencies, running it and configuring it? Even if it was easier, far too many people don't even know what it means to run your own server.

If they can find a way to make it work in the browser than it has a very good chance. If not, it'l be a great social networking tool... for software enthusiasts.

Anyone who says it could kill Facebook is either trying to build hype, or just out of their tree.

This is why it will never take off in its current form. A social network - where you have to host a node yourself? Who the hell is going to do that? Even bearing in mind that a technically-minded person could host a node for his or her friends, the reach of this is obviously limited to the techie and open-source community. I can't think of much worse than a social network consisting only of people who use Linux...!

Typical open-source startup. Big ideals, big technical skills, big hype, no idea whatsoever of how 'normal' users work or what they want.

it's funny and quite shocking tbh that diaspora requires the users to host it themselves. it's been reported to suggest that it's that exact same as facebook, in that you go to diaspora.com and then login and then get it all ready to use there for you, however you can then add and edit your area to give a unique experience, similar to android mobiles; you buy a working phone, but can with a few little work arounds to make it do extra bits and not do other bits.

That's just one side, there is also a hosted option which is in private beta for average users. I do agree with you in general though, it's going to be too complex for the average user to care about. And it's going to be pretty much impossible to convince half a billion people to change services and leave behind everything they've already invested in Facebook.

You realise that what you just said above sounds like what people said about what we now call the Internet - before most people knew what a network was?
