First gaming build - Budget 600-700

Hi guys,

I am looking to build my first gaming build but I don't have an extensive knowledge about which are the best components for a 600 and 700 budget.

I would mainly use the machine for gaming and watching movies. I already have a monitor so you could take that out of the spec build. I do need a mouse and keyboard and all the other parts such as cpu etc

This is the monitor I have : http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-084-LG

So yea if you could just build a spec around it that would utilize its resolution then I would be satisfied.

PS: I would mainly play Black Ops, SC2 , Civ5 , Wow Cata and the new Diablo when it comes out.

Thanks in advance,

Looking forward to what you come up with.

Welcome to forums, just to confirm do you want windows including in that budget?

If not then this set up would be very good, it would allow you to add a 2nd gfx card later down the line fi you needed to as well (mobo and PSU both support it and the 6000 series of cards scale extremely well)

This last spec has the opportunity of adding a second GTX460 in SLI.

A 6870 is not needed with a 22" monitor, the resolution is only 1080.

Adding a keyboard and mouse of the same quality as a X4 and MX518 will add another £60 to that price when the budget was 600-700.

And there is no 955BE anymore on the site.

stulid's right, anything above a 6850/460 (1GB) will have marginal performance gains at 1080p. I'd swap the 460 768 for the 1GB model (or a 6850), downgrade to a cheaper 1156 mobo (you can get everything you need for ~£110) and get the i5 build.

Cookeh:
Why is everyone going for 965's over a 955, though?

I'm speccing a 965 rig at the moment and a couple of people have asked the same question - in the places where I've checked prices, there was something like a £2.20 difference between the two, so I guess that's why I keep the 965 in my plan.

Is there any difference whatsoever, in terms of performance etc?

[EDIT: missed a word]

thanks for the suggestions 95thrifles and stulid. I forgot to mention that I dont need windows included in the build, but you already took that into consideration :) . Stulid's second spec seems nice so far considering the option for a 2nd 460 card later down the line. is the difference between 2 * 460 768 mb and 2* 460 1gb versions vast? And what about the pricing between them two. Which one of those 2 options is better?.

thnx

the 765mb vs 1gb debate has been discussed to length in here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18196022 just go through it and make your own mind up.

Having either of the two memory sizes in a SLI setup will destroy a top end single GPU card, it even eats a expensive ATI 5970 - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/gf-gtx460-sli.html

Ok guys ive decided to go for a build like this, could you tell me if its a proper build ?
btw I left out the Gfx card because ive seen a good deal somewhere else. Its an overclocked GTX 460 1gb version. With the motherboard in this build sli is not an option as far as I know but thats ok.

Do you suggest a cooler for the OC'ed gtx 460 ? If so which one would be most suitable

HI mate that build looks great apart from the motherboard, in sli/crossfire mode it will cripple the bandwidth on the second pci-e slot to x4. This board does crossfire/sli at 8x which is fine. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-121-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495

also if you will be sli'ing then for GTX460 you should really get a 650w-700w psu

Looks good but i would prefer the
Antec TruePower New Modular 650W Power Supply £69.99 and the

Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD502HJ) £31.98
There's only a £12 price difference but I think they are a better quality.

Good luck with your build whatever you choose
cheers
Robocat

definitely spend the extra tenner for the Antec as above, the Corsair CX series are pretty basic, not bad, you dont get bad with Corsair, but for a tenner more youre getting 50 more Watts, modular, more efficient, less ripple, could go on but you get the point
Could go for an F3 but theres less in that, the Seagate is quality too
Why you going for the UD3 mobo? The USB3 is 20 quid cheaper and does same except its mATX but that makes no difference tbh

Ok i changed the build to include the antec power supply instead of the corsair. 95thrifles could you provide a link or the full name of the motherboard you suggested because I can't find it.

Tnx in advance
