Hey,

My grandparents are currently looking for a new vehicle and are very adamant on a 4x4 as they like the ride height.

They are open to any 4x4 as long as its automatic, diesel and comfortable due to their age (they currently have a 1995 Shogun and its very shaky) although they do like the shogun at lot.

Budget is up to £6k as above, is there anything out there possible for this budget?

Thanks

Jeep Cherokee, the later KJ shape. Get a 2.8 CRD Limited, should find a nice one for around 5k. The smaller 2.5 and 'Sport' models command less of a premium but you'd find a really low mileage example for well under budget in that instance.

Just make sure the timing belt has been done. The diesels are a bit agricultural but fairly quiet when cruising, autobox is good and they've a fair amount of kit (cruise, AC, heated electric leather seats, electric one-touch windows, remote central locking, electric mirrors, ABS, PAS, etc).

There's the ever-present Freelander option as well......

Freelander, X-Trail, Shogun...

I bought my better-half a '05 Freelander last year for £5,200 with 30k on the clock and it's been fantastic. It's ever so capable on the snow earlier this year and now. I leave my BMW on the drive and wave bye-bye to other struggling RWD's as I fly past!

If you can find them another Shogun, I'd go for that. I love the last gen shape, especially with the sport kit. At the time of the Freelander purchase, I couldn't find one for the budget, but they're well within now. Pretty bombproof too I hear.

My neighbour bought a Freelander, late first gen, despite my protestations that it would be nothing but trouble.

In the first week the alternator went.

Second week the battery failed.

Third week the starter motor died.......

They moved away after that point, so don't know what happened after that.

Swings and roundabouts though - it'd done 60k so wasn't exactly new but still.....You mileage may vary :) Just buy well and get lucky like BurningHorizons :D

Freelanders can be a hit or miss for a good one. Wifes had One for Two years now, and not wanting to jinks things, it has not been too bad at all. 72000 miles 2002 TD4. Window winder mechs are a pain in the butt but other than that all is ok. Doesn't do big mileage every year but very handy in weather like this
