Because Christmas is only round the corner, I'm thinking about updating the machine again. I was thinking about getting another 5850 for crossfire or selling that and buying a second hand gtx 480? I game on a rez 1900x1200.

Any help guys?

Thanks!

I am thinking the same as i have a 5850 which is great but with the 480 at £299 on ocuk it is tempting

A single card will mean less possible issues, but less performance.

Might as well wait 2 weeks and see what the 6950 offers in performance compared to the 480.

Crossfire 5850 is a good idea - if you look around there are some insane deals for these cards now.

However, may I ask what motherboard make and model number you are using?

I'd get another 5850 personally and save yourself some coin to put to something else.

From my experience crossfire is very good and i've had 2 crossfire setups so far ;)

I was thinking about the new ati cards, any idea on how much the 6950/6970 is going to cost around launch?

Yeah, I've seen some bench marks on these cards and they do very well. If the new ati cards come out to be utter shambles for peformance/£££, then I would go for a 2nd hand Ref 5850.

I have the Asus Rampage Formula III motherboard. Thanks :)

I've herd good and bad things with crossfire, people have no problems what so ever but then people have lots of issues... microstuttering etc... Its hard :p

We'll need to wait until we're nearer to the 13th of Dec for concrete pricing on them.

But, as a total guess, I'd imagine around £275 for the 6950 & £350-£375 for the 6970.

Duff-man just made a good post about microstuttering here :

Basically if you use vsync then it shouldn't be to much of an issue, or at least heavily reduced.

I had 2x5770's in crossfire & the biggest problem was finding a reliable driver to be honest. The Cat 10.4's & 10.5a were fine. but the next few driver sets were bad.

Whether the current drivers are as good as the 10.4/10.5a drivers will need to be answered by someone currently running crossfire as I no longer do.

The performance increase & being able to use 8xssaa in some games was worth it at the time though.

It is hard but I can only recommend from my own experience so far with crossfire its been great. Maybe one day something will change this but for now I'm impressed with it and would recommend it. :)

Thanks for all your suggestions guys... I think I'll get another 5850 and give it ago :) Going to do a fresh windows install aswell when its closer to the time, I need to do it anyway so drivers will be freshly installed. If things go bad and I'm experiencing problems, then I could just sell both cards and get a gtx 480.

Thanks for your tips guys, really helpful :D

Bit late to the party here, but I say definetly go for it!
Just added another myself and I'm well impressed.
After a bad experience with SLi (2x8800 gt's and nothing but trouble!) I was sceptical to try again. But this xfire works so well, I guess both dual card set ups have come a long way.

dont think its worth the outlay for another card at that res, personally. I know im in no hurry to upgrade

Happy prior 5770 crossfire owner and current 5850 crossfire owner here :)

10.9s currently work the best for me.

with the upcoming prices of the 5850, cant go wrong. £115 each, no 1 can go wrong with crossfire at that price :)

What do people expect these to cost? And I'm assuming it will be when the 69XX are released?

Edit: Should have phrased that differently; is that figure of £115 widely accepted as what the new price will be?

would think so, give or take a few £, when 1 sells cheap, most follow or lose sales.
