What car for up to ~£12k

I wasn't meaning to say that all saloon cars should be for parents and people carrying crap around all the time. At my age, and coming from a Fiesta, personally I don't want a 5 door saloon, when I'm older I probably will want more space in the car but at this point in time I'm wanting to go from a small car to something a little bigger due to needing something more comfortable and a diesel for the miles.

If I was going to be doing 10 miles a day I'd be looking at something the same size if not smaller than my fiesta, a lot nipper and bit bothered about mpg.

I guess its down to personal taste and at the moment a 5 series/mondeo etc isn't the type of car I'm looking for. Thanks for the advice, as with any in here it's much appreciated :)

Thats a shame, perhaps if you want a small hot hatch then you should not move 80 miles away from your job! A properly sized car is the best tool for the task at hand.

I did not at any point recommend you choose a 5 Series, I was simply illustrating a point.

A 1 Series is not a comfortable car. I have driven numerous long trips in a 1 Series and each time wished I was doing it in a proper sized car. The ride is joggly and irritating on account of it's short wheelbase.

I wasnt suggesting i want a 5 Series, i was simply stating that that sized car isnt what im after. Dont want to turn this into a bitching thread as im genuinely looking for advice.

Thanks for letting me know your opinion on the 1 Series ride comfort, exactly what I was looking for in this thread. Besides an A3 which has been mentioned are there any similar sized cars that would have a nicer ride?

I'll go test drive before I ben think what exactly to buy but not looking at these types of car before I don't know too much.

Big cars are a lot more comfy for 80 miles a day.
Go for a 320D or if you're worried about the occasional large bill get a diesel insignia (although i'll be slaughtered for mentioning it).
As long as it's comfy, warm (in the winter), quiet (inside) and has cruise control you should be alright.
Have you test driven 4 door saloons & larger hatch's or are you guessing a small car is better?
