Big upgrade for a HD 4870 X2?

Its been a while since I upgraded my computer and my i7/RAM/HDD are all fine (except I might get a SSD :p).

I was wondering if there are any cards that aren't top price that would give a large performance boost over an ASUS HD 4870 X2? Games play quite fine on it except perhaps Metro 2033 starts lagging a bit in combat heavy scenes!

I haven't had a good study around yet so thought I'd ask on here instead for some ideas ;)

I wouldn't mind changing it (partly because I have another computer it can go in), any suggestions?

The new AMD cards are around the corner so perhaps a 6970 or above would suit the bill. I don't know for sure as none of us do yet, but I wouldn't think a 6950 will be a totally satisfactory upgrade but at this stage it's only speculation. The 6990 on the other hand looks to be an absolute monster, but we shall see.

The latest nvidia high end offerings are the 470, 480 and 580gtx's. The 580 has been described as what the 480 should / could have been and is a more complete product plus a little extra performance to boot. It runs much cooler, and iirc has a little less power draw. As for the other cards, I know of people that have changed from a 4870x2 to a slightly weaker (in terms of frame rate maximums) 470gtx and have been very pleased that they did.

In terms of taking full advantage of what's on offer to maximize your upgrade, if you can afford it, I'd probably be inclined to look at a 480 or above or wait for the 6970 or above AMD cards. All depends on your budget at the end of the day. :)

All of the current AMD 6 series cards seem a great deal cheaper than the Nvidia high end cards, I'm assuming they are older technology and considerably worse considering the Nvidia cards cost nearly twice as much?

Are some of the 58/5900 series better than the 6 series then? Seems quite odd :p

Nevermind, I've just a quick read around and I see how it works now (I've not fiddled with computers for a while now in a performance capacity) :p

I'll wait for these new AMD cards to come out and see how they fare against the 580, and then probably get whichever one looks better.

Thanks again for the help! ;)

I'm changing my 4870x2 for a 580gtx but that's only because i got a good deal on the 580 or i wouldnt be changing and metro is not that wonderful :(

No, I wouldn't change it just for playing Metro :p

I just really wondered was all, it'll need changing in the next month or two so I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask now.

My asus 5970 lags in metro2033. I can't play the game 1920x1080 maxed out.

My XFX 5970 plays it flawlessly on DX11 High x4 AA + tessellation @1920x1200. I averaged 68fps, max of 110 and low of 40fps. I would recommend the 580 as buying another later means double the performance due to how good Nvidia scales. Plus Metro 2033 is aimed for Nvidia gamers if thats your game of choice.
