hey guys

im just asking for thoughts and the ups and downs on thid board

1) ive never overclocked before EVER !! and tbh im abit worried as i dont want to **** everything up

2) it will be running with a core i5 760 and used for gaming and browseing the web everyday things etc...

3) may go sli further down the line so will this board run two gtx 470's at max no problem

cheers guys and i really appreciate the help and advice

Its a good board, its supports SLI and Crossfire - http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=170&cat3_no=&prod_no=1844

But the specs dont clearly show if it does it symmetrically, ie: runs two slots at the same bandwidth, even if they are a physical 16X in length, they second slot may only be electrically connected at 4X, it also lacks SATA and USB3.0

If you want SATA and USB3.0 and SLI/Crossfire at a guaranteed 8X/8X speed for both slots? then this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-226-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495 definitely does it all.

hey stulid,

i wont be going sli for quite a while due to experence with overclocking and want to get to know it abit etc..

but will this board be really supportive with overclocking as i have never done it before,
i have an idea how to do it from videos and reading up on it but i would like to get it all right and before i try and wanted to be protected of some sort so i dont damage anything

I have this board, has been very good board, supports crossfire 8x/8x, overclocking is a cinch if you pair it with some corsair xmp memory, go into bios and enable xmp and my i5 750 run at 3.2Mhz(nothing else to mess with, just enable xmp), with intel turbo boost enabled it's upto around 3.8Mhz somtimes as well

i was thinking of corsair dominator or kingston hyperx (both 2x2GB) which would be best at overclocking with this board and a intel core i5 760 (also thinking of getting a corsair h50 to sort the cooling while overclocking) good decision ??

Although I wouldn't advise it, the MSI boards also have one of the best 'auto overclocking' tools available. Reviews show it getting an i5 760 to about 3.7ghz while keeping the voltages at reasonable numbers, and all it takes is the press of one button on the board.

Just recieved my P55-GD65 board for my new build myself yesterday.

While I know these boards run 8x/8x, I was under the impression that all p55 boards that were SLI certified ran at 8x/8x

Not many do actually.

take this one for example - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-389-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495

It only runs the second slot at 4X speed - http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=9i872VNaAILRp8bS&templete=2

1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (single at x16)
1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (@x4 mode, 2.5GT/s, black slot)

Neither does this one - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-225-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1495

Out of all the P55 motherboards OCUK sell, only 4-5 do it at 8X/8X

Ah, but that board is Crossfire only. It isn't SLI certified.

The only ASUS p55 Boards certified for SLI according to the Nvidia site are the Evo, Pro, Deluxe and Supercomputer models, as well as the Maximus boards.

Same with Gigabyte. Only the UD3R, UD4 or higher are SLI certified, and all run 8x/8x. Any P55 board can run Crossfire as far as I know, provided there is 2 x16 length slots, yet only certain ones can run SLI

Doesnt matter, just means nvidia havent tested it to give it their approval.

there are only a limited number of pci-e lanes to spread between the slots and controls chips.

Ah, my bad. Though I thought SLI wouldn't actually work on a non-certified board? Something to do with a code hidden in the BIOS or something to enable it.

I just think its lazy technicians not able to test every bit of hardware out there.

There are so many more P55 boards from manufacturers such as EVGA/Foxcon that claim crossfire/sli but fail with a 4X speed.

I have a board currently with x16/x4 lanes, and while the box mentioned it supported crossfire and was 'Quad GPU ready' as it says, there was no mention of SLI and I'm led to believe that SLI just wouldn't work without driver hacks.

Crossfire and SLI are very different. Crossfire will work on any board with 2 x16 pci-e slots, whereas SLI, from everything I have ever seen, will only work on certified boards (without hacks)

Crossfire only works on AMD chipsets and Intel chipsets.

Sli only works on Nvidia chipsets and Intel chipsets.

Nvidia and AMD hate each other enough to be pathetic enough not to allow an licensing agreement.

so will this msi board support sli ?? from what ive researched it says it can run up to 3 gfx cards but at 8x8x4 so will 8x8 still be ideal for decent sli setup ??
