Yes, I know how utterly silly this sounds and can already here you lot starting up the flamethrowers. Hear me out.

I got a place out in Austria (Austria, not the Kangaroo place), but living here in the UK until next November/December before moving out. My house over there is complete, bar a few electrical bits and pieces I'll buy closer to the time for warranty purposes. Sadly, the lack of a TV is one of those electrical pieces.

Now, this is my rationale. We're going over there for Christmas. We'll spend around 3 weeks there. We're going again for Easter, spending around 2 weeks. Again in the summer for my birthday for around a week. Most likely again in September for a wedding, another week. And finally, a move over there next November, permanently.

However, the lack of TV is ..... irritating. For movie purposes, for family gaming purposes (just got the Kinect), for light watching purposes, etc, I'd like to buy one. The problem is, it's just going to stand there, unused for a year, apart from intermittent use as we visit through the year. As we know, tech moves fast and what I buy for a grand today, is worth 100 bucks in 12 months time.

I guess there is no right or wrong answer to this. My heart says buy it, my head says wait.

If you had the same considerations, would you buy or would you wait?

If they have some sort of freecycle setup over there, just get a CRT tv for a few weeks and then get rid afterwards

2nd hand then new later.

You'll buy now and then look and what you could get for the same money if you'd waited till you move. Well I would anway.

Buy a cheap CRT TV, 28/32 inch or something. Won't cost you more than £50. You driving things over?

Nah, paying for transporting it over, or I could just buy it there. I have a 26' sitting about unused I could take over, but I'm itching to buy a spanking new 60' right now and ship it over. Yes, not the smartest idea, hence the post.

Had to hear a few voices of reason on here :p

Look....If you can afford to have a house in Austria sitting unused for the best part of 12 months then I think the depreciation on a TV set is not going to break the bank for you.

What's your next problem? "Hmm.. should I take the Aston or the Porsche to work today? Oh sod it, the weather is nice. I'll take the Ferrari" :D

Haha. Actually, this was my thoughts in Sainsbury's this morning. Do I buy the Celebrations at £5 (which I actually enjoy more), or do I buy the Quality Street at £4 and save myself a pound. I spent about 10min thinking about it whilst shopping.

The place is unused because I cannot quite afford to live there yet. I need to save more before making the move. 5 years of building and extensions had me on the floor financially. It's only now I can afford to buy the cheapest of the cheap stuff in their specific market. E.g, the cheapest 60' TV.

It I actually had money, I wouldn't think twice about buying the TV now and replacing it a year later. I can't, and need to watch my money and think through all my purchases. :(

Quantity over quality is rarely the best formula. Personally I'd go with a reasonable quality 42" for a few reasons:

1) ease of transport
2) it can be used in another room when you can afford to buy a good quality 60"
3) 42" is one of the most competitive screen sizes - so you get excellent value
4) you have a family to take care of - that's what should take priority

What TV do you use at the moment? Perhaps you can get the best of both worlds and buy your new TV now, use it at home and then ship your current TV over to Austria to use when there. Once you move over you take the new TV with you.

a projector you can bring back with you, small, screen is the only large thing so that stays there, when you move over permanently either keep it as a nice extra toy for another room or flog it.

just a thought

Thought about that, but despite my best efforts, a 60' won't fit into my current place. My house over there has ridiculous amounts of space hence a 60' on the cards instead of something smaller. Right now I have a 32' which only the girlfriend uses for her Crap Factor and some soap or another, so shipping this over isn't much of an option.

Why not just spend £2-300 on an adequate 32" now, use that in the living room for now. Once over there demote it to bedroom/kitchen/study tv where it will be more than capable in 12 months time, then buy the brand spanking 60" tv as the main when you're ready.

why not try and find a pioneer kuro if they still exist? something that in 12 months you REALLY wont be getting your hands on but is an immensely brilliant screen

Would love a Kuro but too pricey. Seeing a 60' for sale for 3.5k. If I spend that money on a TV my girlfriend would stomp on me until I move or breathe no more :(.

I will however hunt for a 50' secondhand to see if they could be had for a better price. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ok, this is what I've done. I bought a Sony 46' LED instead. Spanking new. Was an impulse buy after walking past a Sony store in London today. Well, not quite impulse as I did keep the salesman busy for at least 3 hours. The TV is beautiful. Overpriced, sure. Could I get something cheaper for that size? Much. Anyway, stuck in on a 13 month APR free credit card and will pay it off slowly.

A 46' is surprisingly big and probably the more sensible choice for this moment in time. When the time comes for moving, I'll stick the 46' on the bedroom wall and get a 60' for the living room.

Right now I have it for 3 weeks before the evil removal men comes and take it away.

Anyway, all well that ends well.
