Afternoon

After an hour's useless investigating, does such a thing exist (8-pin to 2x 6-pin adapters for graphics cards)?

Basically - my current power supply is an antec 650 (TP3-650). Its quite old now but has been rock solid for years.

It has 2 x 6 pin pci-e connectors and two 8 pin connectors. My current set up is 5770 in crossfire with each taking 1 6-pin connector.

I'm going to sell these though and have just ordered a 6870 (can't do with crossfire hassles at the moment).

Thing is I'm thinking in the future, better drivers might come out and crossfire be more reliable:rolleyes:, and I may then want to stick a second 6870 in. But to do this with my current power supply I'd need an 8 pin to 2x 6 pin splitter, but they don't seem to exist.

I'm assuming there's a good reason they don't exist, can anyone enlighten me?

P.S. Before my 5770 crossfire set up I had a 4870x2 which took 1 6-pin and 1 8-pin connector, so they must work no???
I also see that 2x 6870's actually have less power requirements at load than my old 4870x2, (which is amazing) so my current PSU should be able to handle 2, is that right?

On some psu's, (corsair being an example), the 8 pin pcie connectors are split, two pins can be removed to allow the use of 6 pins, check your connectors to see if this is possible.

No, mine don't split. One of the 8 pin connectors is also currently plugged into my motherboard (which I assume needs it?)

According to the specs - http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/conn...p?ProdID=07666 itshould only have two 6 pin pci-e connectors.

the graphic cards will come with a molex to pci-e adaptor for the other two needed.

Well, I have 2 of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-033-OK knocking about. Would 2 of these work? Not sure I have 4 spare 4-pin molex thingies though. Is there a way round this, and if so would this be powerful enough?

Then its not a pci-e power connector if its plugged into your motherboard, it will be a 8pin ATX or the server style EPS plug.

that will work.

I think you're right about 1 of the 8-pin ones. I seem to recall trying to plug one into my 4870x2 and nearly breaking it once.

So, the molex route would work then? Will I have enough spare though? My psu only has 4 molex connectors I think and I have 3 internal hard drives and a DVD drive currently connected. How would this work? Sorry if these are basic questions, I've been 'out of the game' for a while.

And, to get back to my original question - is there no such thing as an 8 pin to 2x 6-pin splitter then as this would seem the easiest route?

Your card should come with a molex to 6 pin connector. Mine did.

As I've said - it did/ does and I have 2 of these available: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=CB-033-OK

However, if you read my question above - will this work when I only have 4 molex that are all already being used?

To recap, my psu has 2x pcie 6pins, 1 x pcie 8 pin and I *think*, only 4 molex

like this http://www.antec.com/Believe_it/connectors.php?ProdID=07666 only this doesn't mention the 8 pin pcie one that I have (so am a tad confused).

And - to ask yet again - do 8 pin to 2x 6 pcie adapters not exist!?
