am fixing up a cheap gaming machine for a friend and just need to get a graphics card now
machine is not an up-to-date pc but still quite good, E7400 cpu on Gigabyte P45 board with 4gb ram and 550w psu
i know the amd 4800 series of cards very well as I have had 4830, 4850 and 4870 in some of my pcs
just wondering if these 4xxx series are still considered good enough for the next couple of years, or what in the 5xxx series in worth looking at
obviously would like best price / performance with an emphasis on price !
what are the advantages of a 5770 for example over a 4870 ?
need some help to know which direction to go, will probably try to buy used on the auction site

What about DX11, 4000 series cards cannot do that...Over the next few years DX11 will be become more mandatory for gaming...4000 series can only do DX10.1

5000 series seems more viable to me.

Cheers

Von

ok so to be future proof for new games coming out with dx11 then it would be better to go for a 5xxx series
now, compared to a 4850 or 4870, which of the 5xxx series is worth looking at

Take a look at the 6850/6870s or 460/470s. No point in going for 5xxx cards unless you're getting a brilliant price on a second hand card. Even then, I'd still much prefer a 68xx card + warranty if I wanted it to last a good couple of years.

well, no point getting a gpu out of spec with the rest of the rig. It all depends on how much you're willing to spend on that GPU, and if you mind second hand or not. tbh, I wouldn't bother going beyond 5850, GTX460.

sooner have the 5870 as it is faster than the 6870 and can be had for near the same price now

The major advantage that a 5770 has over a 4870 is it it uses less power, so runs cooler and quieter for about the same performance. DX11 features aren't imo important as the card isn't fast enough to use them.

5850's can be had for £115, which is an absolute steal.

That £115 5850 is a pre-order for the 6th Dec.

The discussion on this suggests the retailer has many many times in the past staged these false deals to lure people to their site, before cancelling the deal claiming an error. The volume of posts on it also would suggest that more people have pre ordered than there are 5850 chips left for sale in the whole of the UK put together.

graphics

so if a 5770 is not fast enough to run dx11 what advantage has it over something like a 4870

and if buying a dx11 card specifically so that it can use dx11, what is the base card worthwhile spending money on ?

If you can, get a 460 1gb. Should last for a good 2-3 years. The next step after that is a 6870/470. The 6870 is cooler, quieter, and consumes less power, but the 470 is a beast of an overclocker and can be flashed to a 480, so the choice is up to you between the two.
