For £1k?! Are you joking?!

You wont get good mpg and reliability in the sort of car that has 4 wheel drive yet only costs a grand! 4wd is hugely inefficient for a start.

I'm not asking what is good.I'm asking what is best for mpg and reliabilty for the budget.

have a look for a honda HR-V ,one with awd, used to get 35 mpg out of mine. don't get an auto though they are under powered.Mine was a 2000 1.6 vtec 4x4 and i never had 1 issue with it in 5 years.

You needed to post on the internet to see what 1K 4x4 to buy? Then trash talk the help given? Surely the one to buy is the one thats on Autotrader is closest to you and the one you like, sorry 'you're friend' likes? Given a grand doesn't get you anything really exciting as a normal car, did you expect 4x4's to be all magically cheaper, especially at the one time of year all the drama queens are looking to buy one?

Jeepers! haha the punz :)

He didn't bad mouth anyone!

What does your friend want from a 4x4? Is it just for on the road during winter or do they intend on greenlaning or offroading?

I picked up my shogun for £560 with 10months mot and 6 months tax and so far its been very reliable and i have given it some stick off road.

Only down side is the MPG is pretty shocking - Low 20s for my 3lt V6 Auto.

Land Rover Discovery?

We use it for driving around where my girlfriend keeps her horses, it was ace in the snow last year!

We tied sledges to the back of it and went sledging uphill through the fields! :D

Sounds ideal.

However, you are buying the equivalent to a cabrio on a sunny day. You're not going to get a good deal.
