Who has hung their keys up for the winter?

Finally, some support for the "Leave it at home" brigade - I was beginning to think that I was a little bit soft for suggesting it :p

Guess I'm being put off by the forum scaremongering of RWD + Youth + Turbos + Autobox + No TC/SC/ABS X Crap weather = Ditch :(.

Managed in the snow for the past two years with only a couple of mistakes. Spinning off a roundabout and then sliding down a hill with my breaks failing, nearly crashing into an Alfa. Lessons learned.

Not many are hanging up their keys who don't have a 2nd car or don't need to drive.

Nah I have 4WD anyway :)

But also have a Discovery TD5 in stock, which is just wonderful on these horrible snowy roads up here.

Ive never seen it snow so bad (In this country anyway).

Everyone knows 4x4's can do 130mph down the fast lane in all conditions!

(Not a dig at anyone in here, just something I've noticed recently..)

4wd improves traction not grip
ie you can accelerate better but it does bugger all for cornering or braking understand that and youll be fine

Obviously something I know and respect, not the silly woman I saw in an X5 yesterday overshoot a T junction by 2 car lengths! Don't think she was expecting that the silly cow!

Just driving sensibly according to the conditions as always. Just at this time of the year when sat a junction/lights etc I pay slightly more attention to what's approaching from the rear hoping to not see the face of a panic stricken wally who misjudged how far he/she would slide when braking like it was a warm summers day (for the pedants this is on a slippery/icy day).
Probably have some fun watching the junctions nearest home to see how many slide out onto the high street with their last minute braking. It's "mostly" entertaining ;)

I'm garaging it as of today. What tipped it was I was having a quiet drive over the downs today and these bunch of jokers in MX5's, Mondeo's and the odd Civic turned up and started throwing their cars all over the place.

I'm not taking the car out again with such craziness about until the spring.

It's mainly people who have 2 cars that do this IME. I'd rather not have some **** crash in to my pride and joy if I can help it.

If you had a garage queen you didnt want to get dirty you'd have hung up the keys a month or so ago now.

Not really

Most 2 car households have two cars because there are two people that drive in the house and both need to get to work. Its those who have a garage queen that can stay tucked up in the garage while they take the more mundane method of transport to work.

That's exactly what I meant. I meant individuals who have 2 cars or more. Never heard of a garage queen before, but know a fair people who have a cheaper car to do mundane tasks.

If you can afford to, why not?

I know someone who is worried about some idiot crashing into their car whilst it is parked on the road, nothing wrong with that is there? Same principle.

Loved the winter weather last time over in the GayMobile. Roof always down unless it REALLY rained and learnt a lot about car control. RWD, skinny tyres, just the ticket without being stupid.

Gonna miss it this time. Keys hung up for involuntary reasons of course :(

garage queen refers to a car that spends lots of time in the garage. Owner takes something cheap and cheerful to work - like a pegueot 306 or a Ford Mondeo or seomthing, that gets left out on the drive. Meanwhile tucked up in the garage is something more exciting.

Case in point is a friend at work. He owns an Aston Martin V8 vantage that spends lots of time tucked up in the garage at home. The rest of the time he drives an old Mk 1 Focus ST170 that generally very tatty, but saves the aston getting too dirty and dinged at supermarkets etc.. !
