Hello i currently have around £200 to spend on a new gfx card....i have been swaying towards the 6870 cards....does anyone have any insight to any ideas for gfx cards for around this price.

I aim to just be gaming on my system...things like WoW and Starcraft.

thanx .

460gtx would do you fine for those games and they come around £120 for a 768mb version. What resolution you playing at?

use the other £80 to spend on other things. Maybe more ram? larger HD? or something completely different?

so is that 1920x1080 or 1920x1200?
either way i dont think you should go with the 768mb one, get the 1gb at least.
the 6870 is better than the 460 and actually has less power consumption, but a 6850 would probably be better - between the 460 and 6870 and massive OC headroom.

@1920x1080

As i say i have £200 to use.....and wanted to get best 1 for that price.....and 1 that wont be redundant too quick in the near future....:)

even at 1920x1200 a £120 460gtx 768mb can handle pretty much anything. Wow isnt a demanding game, you could probably play 3d surround in wow on a 768mb card. Same with starcraft 2

Both ATI and Nvidia have good cards around the £200 range but they will end up going redundant in 6-12 months time. If you want a future proof card 6990 of they come out or a 580gtx. Or nvidias dual gpu card.

a 460gtx 768mb will do every game maxxed out at 1920x1080. Maybe not metro 2033 but what card doesnt struggle with that. Thats if you play it ofc.

So would the 6850 OC higher than the 6870?

nope it wont clock higher but it will overclock more than the 6870

6870 goes to about 1ghz wheras 6850 goes to about 850-900

i dont think the 768mb version will play all games at max - and run smoothly. it won't have that much memory to store all the textures.
for *more* future proofing the best card at the moment for 200 is the 6870, but yes it will become redundand in a few years. but still play games well. (look at the 4000 series)

(i think the 6990 will be a bit out of budget @ about £500 :D )

it is a faster card, but its up to you really :)

5870 - faster
6870 - better crossfire scaling, better tesselation better power consumption (obv cos its newer)

you might be able to overclock the 6870 to around the 5870 mark (5870 still has more shaders though) and still use less power, but then again you can overclock the 5870 more and get even better performance.

theyre about tied but if its raw performance youre looking for, then geth the 5870 otherwise get the 6870 ;)

I bought a 6870 recently for around £180.

I have clocked it to 1000/1150 and it performs very well at 1920x1200 with all settings on max.

Main reasons I went for this card over something like the 470gtx was the power consumption and newer tech that it has..

To the op get a 6870 as at your resolution it will be better than a gtx460. It may cost a little more but straight out of the box its a fast card with no need for overclocking in any game that i am playing atm. Imo theres no need to buy a lesser card when you want the best for your money and in this case the 6870 fits the bill.
