Guys,

Since Monday my main machine has been playing up on me… basically I get as far as the windows flag and then the screen goes black and the hard drive stops accessing?! Initially a hard restart sorted it and I was able to boot into windows the 2nd time around, but since then, I can't :(

Now, the only way I can get back into windows is by going into safe mode, scheduling chkdsk (/f) and restarting. Then its fine? I've done all my backing up so I'm ready for a complete failure, but I'd just like to know what the problem is first.

Once I'm into windows (like I am now?) everything is fine? It's bizarre!

Any ideas?

Cheers!

I'm still getting this - even after a rebuild!

Things were fine for a couple of days and then either something I'm using or a ms update causes the issue... after the startup crash all I need to do is restart, go into safe mode and then restart from my user loggin screen - I don't need to bother with chkdsk.

Any ideas? Its really bugging me now :(

Somthing similar happened to my home PC and form me it turned out to be the vid card but first things first get MemTest 86+ and get the RAM checked.

Same happened to me, when I installed my gtx 460. I could get into safe mode and first start up with it. But when I got to fully implement/load the drivers, it stopped dead at the starting windows process.

Figured it was some incompatibility, or the psu not giving the card enough juice. It was one or the other because the card worked fine in my new system.

I'm starting to think it might be the gpu - although its fine once I get into windows and I can leave my machine on for days and play games for hours on end without problem :(

I'm going to try downgrading my gfx (latest cats, 10.10) drivers later - I've literally only had this issue for a few weeks...

Cheers

What can I do to check the integrity of the boot files on my machine? There are couple of commands aren't there?

At the moment my startup process consists of; turning the computer on, pressing f8 into safe mode and restarting from the login screen. Then everything's fine and my machine boots normally :(

It just doesn't like booting from cold...
