Ok guys looking at upgrading to an iPhone 4 from my HTC Magic in December.

Just concerned about 'only' getting 500MB data allowance.

Does anybody now how much that is in the real world? I use my phones data allowance mainly at work and when out and about, at home it would be conected to my wi-fi.

I have had me DHD for 3 weeks now and have used 100MB of my 500MB allowance - I always connect to wifi when home as it is much faster.

500MB should be fine as you are connecting to wifi at home.

I always used to go over 500mb with my Magic, it's mostly my google reader groups synching and listen grabbing podcasts.
Now I've got a Desire HD, it probably more on account of the flash videos I watch now too.
I've moved to T-Mobile with their higher FUP now, so I no longer worry too much about it.
In fact the only restriction as far as I'm concerned is how much data use drains the battery, but now my battery has bedded in it's not much of a problem anymore either.
You considered a Desire HD rather than an iPhone? Or are you looking to try something different from android?

500 MB is very stingy but on the other hand, there seem to be loads of open WiFi networks when I'm in town, out shopping, in most restaurants, etc. For me 500 MB means that I have to consciously think about what I'm doing / downloading when out and about, which is a bit annoying. I dislike this trend for reducing data allowances as I don't want to constantly have to think about this, but that said, it's manageable.

Ok, I've just downloaded a Data Analyser so will see how much I use in a week, multiply by 4.2 for the weeks and thats how much roughly i'll be using.

I'm with vodafone atm but 3.co.uk do the iphone for £10 less a month with 1GB Data usage so might go with them.

I'm on a 1Gig Data plan and I rarely exceed 250MB with moderate web browsing (mostly checking forums/news - full fat version of the sites not mobile versions) a small amount of RDP, the odd upload to youtube or my web hosting and light spotify use.

You can go to settings > general > usage, in the iphone 4 to see how much data you are using. My limit is also 500mb per month, and in the first month I reached it because I would be streaming quite a bit (catchuptv). Since then I rarely stream vids apart from the occasional youtube clips, but I use it for browsing everyday and I have never exceeded the 500mb limit. Infact, this month is almost up now and just checking my usage its ~200mb so not even half.

It's a case of being sensible - streaming the F1 qualifying over the 3.5g connection, for example, upsets vodafone a lot. In this case it is better to get on with the work you are paid to do....

Seriously, aside from doing that and from accidently downloading a rather large file over the wrong network connection, I struggle to exceed 300mb a month on an N900.

Never gone over 500mb in a month in over a year of being on my current contract. Closest I've come is about 350mb I think. If you stick to basic browsing and live in an area with spotty 3G, it's pretty easy.

Rubbish. I never download files on my Desire and I'm always over 500mb just through web browsing etc.

You must web browse a lot then? Or tether and do it?

For general use 500MB is ok, not great, but it should be fine considering you probably have Wifi most of the places you go.

As a general rule you'll be ok with the lower caps unless you want to stream radio/spotify etc.

what monthly plan and which provider?
Don't really want go over £35ppm. That's why the 3.co.uk looks appealing.

Vodafone - I'm paying £17/m for 1gig data, 1gig openzone, 600 minutes, unlimited texts but it was a special offer after I complained about rubbish upgrade offerings at the end of my initial contract. Similiar package used to be available for £20/m tho.

EDIT: Yup its still available as a sim only plan at £20/m.

500mb is pretty good. If had mine for 2 weeks now and I have only used 102mb

500mb will be fine unless you want to stream videos, download music, use spotify, share connection with laptop & listen to internet radio etc. Actually, 500mb is a bit rubbish.
