Externally Radiated Watercooled System

Hello, all. Please go easy on a n00b and what hopefully isn't too daft a question.

I'm looking to put together a fast, quiet, overclocked AMD-based system, into a Lian Li PC-A77F case...
I want to use water cooling on the CPU (1090T) and the GPUs (new Radeons when they eventually come out!) and perhaps elsewhere in the system, for maximum performance.
Having seen something similar on Youtube, I wondered how the OC community feels about having the radiator external to the machine...
Considering a Black Ice SR-1 480, with 4 silent fans above, and 4 below in push-pull config.

I see it like this...

Advantages: outputting heat further from the case, can be on own fan controller, case still has full aircooling capabilities for rest of components with no radiator to reduce the airflow, looks cool (to me!)

Disadvantages: larger, less portable system, potential damage to/dusting of radiator, some people will hate the look.

I welcome any feedback/suggestions, diagrams.

Thanks in Advance. Wylis.

P.S. I've decided to call my machine the Wylis AR:SE
That's AMD / RADEON : SILENCE / EXCELLENCE.

I expect that name to split opinions, but I have mine and I like it. :D

you want something like this (my old rig):

tbh i scrapped my old antec bc it couldnt handle inside rads, and now have a cm690iiadv that has 120.2 and 120.1 rad inside it. and my temps are pretty much the same (idles at 19c)

when you fit someting externally you gotta think about what it covers, ie in the pic above i could only use 1 monitor out and had to be careful on what i installed in the pci-e slots.

Cheers, mate.
I am envisioning the radiator to be on stilts/in a mount about 6" above the case...

I'm thinking about fabricating one myself...
Would be wood, then sprayed black to match the case.
What do you reckon?

Well it certainly worked, you need quiet fans though. Chief drawback is the amount of dust which gets in the rad, though it is not difficult to take it apart to clean, and suprisingly the amount of dust and hair I had stuck it it didn't seem to affect temps that much. It has been stripped down now though and its all going inside a 700D at some point.

Ta... I was thinking Noctua NF-S12B ULN Ultra Low Noise 120mms... are they quiet enough, do you think?

I used to have the rad like that in post #6. The issue I had was when I was bleeding the loop. Air would be trapped right at the top of the rad. Settled for this set up instead.

Inlet at the bottom and outlet at the top. Made it easier to bleed.

Hey momo56, I thought about doing something like. Where did you get the frame or what did you make it out of?
How are the fans powered?
Do the fans run at a fixed speed or are they connected to a fan controller?

Thermochill PA rads have screws on the sides of the rad so they're easy to connect side to side.

The fans are all connected on one channel using a lamptron fc2. This way all the fans run at the same speed and you even turn the fans off with the fc2.

Also I cant explain it but the airflow makes a noise when it hits the rad fins. A shroud made out of an old fan helped stop this, just waiting for the bigger screws to arrive.

The setup cools an, i7 @4.2ghz, 2000mhz ram, rampage 2 extreme waterblock and a 4870x2 (will upgrade to get 2 of the new ati 6990 or nvidia 580 soon enough).

During the night time I run it passively when downloading so I can sleep peacefully hence why I need such a big surface area. Even with such a big area the cpu still hits about 75-80 on idle when passive.

Not really, I use 2 D5's in series on setting 1. Having them at setting 5 reduces the temps on the cpu by 1-3 degrees.

Used to have a D5-B on its own which gave better results than the 2 d5's at setting 1, but decidied to go for 2 pumps for redundancy.
