Hey,

Im looking to get a decent graphics card for my new build, and im really leaning towards the gtx460 1gb, as its OC ability is rated pretty high, although with these new cards from AMD (ATI), i have got competition to consider. Ive heard that the 6850 oc's better than the 6870 but they are both quite cheap atm and v.close to GTX 460 price. Im quite stuck as to what to do and in the end just want better performance for money after some good OCing hehe.

Also if i where to get a GTX 460, which is the best model IYO.
I was going to get the Gainward or Gigabyte, and was wondering if you get a slight pre-overclocked card will it overclock better than a standard when you OC it yourself, it does in not make a difference - for example a Gainward GS or Gainward GS (GLH - Goes like hell) - would one do a better OC than the other?

Sorry for a lot of questions and a bit of amateur-ness, but its my furst build so yeh :P.

Thanks a lot.

Well I heard the best 460 is the Cyclone and Hawk from MSI or Gigabytes version.

But tbh, the 6870's are nigh on £200, and for that you could get a 470.
Just thought i'd throw that into the equation.

Thanks for quick replies..

Was it alright overclocking your 460, i dont plan to do it heavily, but i will moderately as im quite new to OCing. What frequencies are you running at? I will probs go for the gainward or would you recommend the evga over it? Also ill stick gtx 460 it seems to perform nicely when OCed - also how long do you reckon it would last for on an OC? 3+ years? i hoping at least 3 im not sure how much the extra voltages hinder life tbh.

Oh yeah and also, can anyone answer my question on whether slight pre-overclocking makes a difference to your own overclock? Thanks

I seriously recommend the MSI Cyclone, I dont know of any other non-reference design card that has quite the level of cooling as that.

EDIT

The level you can overclock varies on each card induvidually, but buying a pre-overclocked card simply means they gurantee a stable card at the overclocked levels specified and the warranty isnt void.

Nice. Now its really between the msi hawk "talon attack" and the evga F.T.W, what kind of temps are you running on your *** Tute?

pretty much all gtx 460's will do 800/4000 on stock volts so you can save yourself some money and oc it yourself if you want.

i'd put more money into one with a better cooler than a higher stock overclock, i have the gigabyte standard oc model (the 715hmz core one) and when oc'd to 800/4000 it stays in the 60's while looping the heaven benchmark.

the cooler on the msi talon attack is meant to be very good also.

It's already been confirm that the Gigabyte 5850 that's going for £117 is a non-reference card that cannot be volt-tweaked, so it would have a hard time overclocking pass even 800MHz...and that card is only on pre-order...

were are people finding these? I cant see them :P

And I would go with the 6870

Furmark loads my F.T.W card at 85C, idle temp was 45C before it began.

Although, oddly, after 5 mins (around 1 min at 85C), it locked the PC and bluescreened. Does Furmark still cause overvoltage on cards?

i would much like to overclock the 460, but im not sure what temps ill be getting at around so i wanted a good cooler and the talon attack has good stocks and cooler so thought was a good place to base around, also with the decrease of the gtx 470 and the competing 6870 would it be worth to up my budget a bit and get 470 or 6870 or stick with v.good value of 460, also i think the 460 would be easier to SLI in the future? but would it be much better than one 470 for example which are only like around 200 pounds atm, compared to about £170 for a 460?

Price of that card has now gone back up!:(

If I were spending around £150 today I'd get this the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 SUPER OC 1024MB

can be had from another rEtailer for £153.99!:D
