Hiya,

Thought I'd post about the new motor I've just purchased -

2009 X-Trail 2.0 dCi 6sp Manual
29,000km

It's not going to be exciting to drive but it's an all rounder for what we need.

It's got a ECB Bull bar on the front so I can bash the roo's out of the way when we do some long trips.
A tow ball for when we tow a boat (need to get a boat first though!) ;)
Should be more capable than the little corolla we had for getting to remote locations.

Apparently it's a Renault 2.0 turbo diesel engine which Nissan badge as their own?!

The price I paid would be ridiculous for the UK - but is actually reasonable for Australia as used cars hold their value here.

Be interested to hear if anyone has had any experience of these good or bad!

Cheers

Looks like a pretty ideal runabout for the outback - I can imagine what you mean about the price :)

I'm considering taking my HSV Clubsport R8 around the circumference of Australia when I can take a couple of months unpaid leave - not sure if it's the most suited vehicle but there are sealed roads the whole way around... hmm decisions decisions.

WA is the biggest rip off for used cars. You still could have done better though :p
Enjoy the boating and offroading.

Quite possibly the worst hire car I've ever been given was a 2.2 DCi X-Trail "Columbia".

A diesel that averages 22MPG, you have to ask, what's the point? It was slow, unrefined, thirsty, and cumbersome.

Does look like a hell of a lump of metal for a 2ltr let alone dragging a boat and the family and all the other stuff in the boot

Yeah fuel is cheap here compared to the UK, but it's not so cheap when the average distance you do on a trip is ~300km. Fuel prices are going up not down.

And diesel is for the torque - this 2.0 dCi is much improved on the old 2.2 engines of the past.

And hitting someone at speed without it wouldn't be?

It is the lower speed stuff where they make such a drastic impact. Of course at higher speeds it probably makes little difference.

You are ill advised to cover distance in Australia without one. The amount of squashed roo beside some of the highways is insane.

I guess if you're travelling across country a lot, then fair enough.

OPs average journey is 300km, so it's not all town driving ;)
