I bought an old AV Receiver off ebay one month ago, i bought it for £35 and now one of the surround channels has stopped working completely. :(

I contacted the guy and he said that there is always the risk when buying second hand that it will stop working. So i have to buy another one, of course now i am sceptical about buying from Ebay because I could end up wasting more money and time buying from ebay than buying a new one.

I was looking at the onkyo 308 and 508. I have wharfedale diamond 8 speakers, 8.3, 8.1 and center speaker. The only difference with the 508 is that it has mic calibration and has 130w per channel instead of 100. It has some more features but nothing that i will use. Like another hdmi input and ipod features. Is it worth paying the extra £80 for higher watt and mic calibration ?

Would you recommend another AV Receiver in the same price range over the onkyo ?

I've got a 307 and the Mic calibration is handy to get you started setting up distances etc.

I wish I'd got a better amp now. Although the 307 works fine I just wish it did a bit more. HDMI audio etc would be nice.

What Watt are your speakers?

I have a 607 That i am just replacing my 307 with.. Great bit of kit.. I only went for the 607 for the extra HDMI Ports and DTS-HD... I am selling my 307 was just getting things sorted then it was going on the MM... Emil in trust if interested :)

Thanks for the offer but I have been put off buying second hand electronics for good after wasting my money on ebay. Does the 307 have full hdmi pass through, video and audio ? I think i looked in to that model and i don't think it passes through audio on the hdmi. I don't use hdmi at the moment but i will in the future so i wouldn't want to have to buy another one then.

what's the price difference between the 308 and 508? The mic calibration is great for the initial setup (although my 875 needed some tweaking afterwards anyway). I wouldn't worry too much about the power outputs, although the internals must be slightly higher rating to be able to offer the extra power.

EDIT: Just been looking on Exceptional-av and the 508 also has much better speaker terminals for the surrounds. This means you can use better cable than some 1mm rubbish which only just fits in the spring clips. I see the 508 is £70 more on there at £260. If it's the choice between those two, I'd go for the 508

It's not just the differences onkyo tell you about, the 508 will have better quality components, which should create a better sound, whether you'll hear the difference is another thing. I'd go 508
