Expensive parking £215 an Hour !!!!!

I have use of the company van (courier) at weekends and parked in a quiet side street down near the river in Leeds at 3pm this afternoon; on my return a couple of hours later ....... NO VAN ..... FUUUUuuu.

I rang the police non emergency line to be told that it had been removed by J D Parking Consultants and their tel' number is 08450582327: I rang the number and was told that they couldn't do anything today and ring back at 8-30am tomorow, the release fee will be £430!!!

The street must be private though it doesn't look any different to the surrounding council ones. On closer inspection, I found a No Parking/Clamping notice about 7ft up a wall that I didn't notice when I parked.

I don't mind paying a reasonable fee but £430 is taking the pee, wouldn't you say?

Don't think that there is anything that I can do except pay up and then have a word with Trading Standards regarding the unreasonable fee.

I hope that there is no damage to the vehicle. :(

Did you even read their website ?

The authorised user shall not charge a clamp release fee in excess of £135.00 cash.

If you really paid £430 release fee then some would say your stupidity deserved being charged 3x the amount.

For all those who say "sucker" .... You would do the same, because they have the vehicle and won't release it until payment is made in cash and every day more will cost £40 extra; arguing what their site says or what the BPA says will not get the vehicle back any quicker: They are acting within the law (as it stands).

twoblaclines: maybe you should read and understand the OP stating that the vehicle had been removed (not just clamped) before accusing me.
I did get a receipt with all the relevant details on including his SIA number the numbers read as follows:

Clamping £100.
Towing/removal £250.
Storage £40 per day or part thereof.

Errrrr they say they accept credit cards, but would only take cash?
Does the sign say they will tow away rather than just clamp?
Seems a bit strange.

I can assure you the police only act to prevent criminal acts, such as criminal damage or breach of the peace.

umm, no.

Their sign says they take card, their site says they take card, but the guys refuse to take card? Sounds like they know they can be hassled by a credit card company to me.

Am I right in saying that you'd be perfectly within your rights to sit in the car until they buggered off (to stop them towing it away) then remove the clamp without damaging it and simply return it?

This is only possible if they're a private company?

Clampers are useful when you're a resident of a private road but scum of the earth when you're not. Same with anything I suppose!

That's absurd, they don't even charge those kind of prices in London. I'm sure Trading Standards will be able to ask them to justify the fees for expenditure. If not, take it to the press, they love stories like this.

exactly the same thing happened to me last sat/ sun morning 28/11/10, they still have my car but i have a very good solicitor who is making case and taking them to the court, what was the outcome of your claim?
do you remember where you went to get your car?

appreciate any help

Hi

I was clamped and then towed in less than 2 hours in Leeds city centre by a company called JD Parking Consultants Ltd. I called them immediately and they were already adding a charge for 1 days storage! A grand total of £385! While I know charges can be levied, charging for clamping and then towing AND storage in under 2 hours is excessive.

I've issued a claim against them and managed to get my car back but the issue of charges will be dealt with in court in January. I've met these guys and seen how their operation works and it really isn't justifiable that they charge such unreasonable fees!

I was hoping that there might be others out there with similar experiences??? Anyone who feels that they paid but wish they hadn't or anyone who's been through a claim process?? I could be able to help with free legal advice and claim your money back. If other people show that they've also been charged out of proportion amounts then it will really help our case but also show these guys that they can't do this to people and be so smug about it.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice guys!

I pulled into a car park in the city centre that used to be public pay and display with about 40 spaces, empty bar a white van and 4 or so cars. There was a big sign so I parked up to go and read the restrictions and cost, as I was reading them a clamper started trying to clamp my car behind me! Turns out it had been turned into a council workers only car park.

Stand and bang he did not.

As The coffin was slowly being lowerd
into the grave at the funeral of a traffic warden,
a voice screamed, "I'M NOT DEAD,I'M NOT DEAD"
to which the priest smugly answered, "I am sorry my son,
but the paperwork has alread been done!

I like that :D

Reading these does make me want to know how to pick a lock. I know there's kits readily available but I dare say its more complicated than I give it credit.

Would be nice to be able to remove the clamp with no damage then place it on the clamper's van with your own lock.

I've been clamped once and it was for not having Tax. Completely my fault, I didn't get a reminder and I'd not been driving long. Got clamped while I was away, paid a release of £200 or something then had to buy tax (£85 6months) then about a month later I got another charge from the DVLA of £75 for not having tax for 1 month.

I mean fair enough I was at fault, but the costs are just ridiculous for such an easy mistake.

Those costs actually sound fair especially when compared with the fees charged by the clampers the OP was subjected too

All of these scumbag companies will be out of business next year, the Freedom Bill proposes to outlaw all private clamping in the UK and comes before parliament in February.
