Snow and Retardedly slow driving (doing my head in)

Just put the phone down to my neighbour. She has a Merc C Class and it took her 2 hours and 15 minutes to do the journey it took me 10 minutes. THIS is the difference between RWD and 4WD. On the 3 days a year we have snow it is fabulous, she had to be towed out 3 times, 3 times!!

christ. Thank goodness for my FWD skip lol

The octavia I was driving was reading 2degs when I left Bristol. The windscreen iced over about 5 minutes after I left . Had to frantically give it some washer jet and put the blowers on full.... Temperature readings mean nothing.

Also, I suspect the story is being exaggerated for effect, there's no way it was causing such a delay on a dual carriageway as to cause any noticeable delay

Mmm, although I had a C Class as a loan car when the Cerbera was written off and it didn't have a lot of grip with the standard tyres. That was in the snow a couple of years ago and the delivery guy couldn't get it up the hill to my house. Even when the snow had all melted a few days later I surprised myself how easy it was to get it sideways... often when I didn't really want to

I live in Cardiff and where I live the road is like an ice rink, I've watched so many people outside my house lose traction and take a long slide back down the hill, while amusing I fear for my cars safety sat at the side of the road :( It's been like this since last Friday.

I'd rather people not risk the conditions and drive slower, sure my journey might take a bit longer but at least I'll get there alive and my car in one piece. Lack of patience kills!

OP - Quite frankly I couldn't care less where you lived - though saying that as long as it's not anywhere near me then it's all good, but can't you understand that everyone else was driving sensibly given the likely conditions? Pretty much the entire country has been experiencing below freezing temperatures so everyone is rightly driving cautiously.

I guess you're yet to have an wintery 'off' in your long and illustrious driving career... but I wouldn't worry it will be along very soon.

Last year i drove home from uni in thick snow with about 20 foot of visibility for 24 miles. I didnt crash because i drove to the conditions.

I also drove to uni every day in that month of snow we had (i had a month of snow anyway)
I didnt crash then either, I slid a few times on snowy and icy roads in my hometown, slightly scuffed my wheel on a high kerb at 5-10 mph in about 1 foot of snow going down hill around a corner.
Most of that was in my first post, albeit in less detail.

I learnt a lot about driving in the winter last year.

i never said anything about delays, or being late or worring about being on time. Merely that when its a bit cold the formula NSL/2 annoys me.

yeah this is true, for sure. This relates to what i said how? I didnt say that i know all about winter driving?
Edit: this is to janesy not the post above to avoid further confusion

They're.

Exactly, how do you know the people in front haven't done 100 notable winter journeys?
i edited when i realised what you meant
there were about 70 or more as i went to uni back and fore every day plus work on weekends plus trips to shops etc etc
i thought you originally meant the trip i mentioned plus the skid. which you didnt

i guess it amounts to about 500 miles in snow, in that year

You said multiple times that the roads were definitely, absolutely fine. No ice whatsoever, not even possible.

Got a bit stuck :/

It's had another 3 inches since then, should be fun tomorrow :(

ok thats probably right, maybe towards the kerb they may have been a little, but the roads were dry and heavily gritted, im pretty sure that you're evalution would be similar and that you would agree 50 was reasonable had you seen it though

I thought the bitching was supposed to have stopped in Motors?

Anyway, I agree with the OP. Some real 'over cautious' drivers at the moment. Gets on my wick.

Was driving through the village late one night on the weekend when I came up behind a new Micra crawling at around 15mph on a 30 zone. I imagine the driver to be either female and/or of the older generation and that they thought they would kill somebody if they drove any faster.

I have no doubt they thought I was a lunatic when I put my foot down a little and went past them on a straight piece of road with no wheelspin, no drama. I'll slow down where the roads are bad, or for corners before I get to them if I don't know what to expect. But if certain people have no faith in their own ability to drive in the snow, why are they out in these conditions?

This is my sentiment really, over cautious-ness, i'm not saying things should be like normal driving style wise.

I also feel that these people we like what Coxyis said, and had no faith in there ability, the sort of person who drives 40 mph on the motorway anyway.

OP: Look at it this way if they are going slow they are not going to crash into you when you are giving way at a junction or roundabout.

The amount of cars I've seen in my village coming up to junctions and skidding when they are already at walking pace is stupid.

Be safe, not sorry.
