Hey all, me and the bird managed to get some cheap return train tickets down to London for a weekend in Feb.........whilst we are there we'll be wanting to do the usual touristy things as neither of us have been to London properly, and as such are both pretty useless when it comes to finding somewere to stay!

Now our train arrives (and leaves home from) in at Euston........am I OK in assuming that staying in the Euston area wouldnt be too bad as it has good transport links to most of the other main tourist attractions in London and would be easy to get around?

We're not after anything amazing and something like the Ibis or Travelodge will suffice if i'm honest as we'd rather spend the extra dollar on a good restaurant one evening. But just want to know if it's a wise move to stay around there as she's going to want to hit the shops at some point and we're going to want something to do at night (if it is just walk around and soak in the atmosphere).....

Which also then leads me onto another question.......do any of you fine folk know of any good restaurants in the area around Euston? Something a bit more upmarket than your standard Brewers Fayre/Whetherspoons'esque joints!? And things to do at night in the area?

Euston isn't the best area to stay imo, if you want something budget (ish), have a look at the royal national in russell square, its large, the rooms are clean and OK and again, links are good for transport, it's also about 5 minutes walk from Euston / Kings cross.

As for food, can't really help you there, but Jamie Oliver has an italian restaurant which he recently opened in Soho (or is it at covent garden?) , which also is quite keenly priced, i intend on trying it when i'm down there, also, try Claridges, or Ramsays on royal hospital rd if you really want to flash the cash! Then there's Leicester square / picadilly etc for chain restaurants. Just don't be tempted by the aberdeen angus steakhouses (if they still exist).

To be honest the underground is good enough to stay anywhere in the city and travel around quickly and easily (apart from peak time) so anywhere that might sound like a trek mightnt be as far as you think

London is a dive. For 80£ a night, you get something you'd be ashamed to pay £15 quid for here in Glasgow. Some of the hotels are extremely dodgy. (Kings cross/euston area) In saying that though, the Travelodge round the corner from Kings cross is alright, and there;s an excellent 'local' pub opposite, £2.20 for a pint.

Ibis outside isnt cheap unless you book early, showing @ £149 per night today

Just been on the site and its £163 for 2 nights, 18th-20th Feb? So thats what, £81.50 a night?

Just been onto the Travelodge site and the price for the same dates is £131.50. The Premier Inn is £196 so quite some variation in prices there.

I've never really had a problem with either an Ibis or Travelodge before in other parts of the country, they are budget hotels, yes, but they do the job so may just plump for the Travelodge if we do end up staying in the area.

@TheWanderer1984 - the reason I had it in mind to stay in Euston was because it's just where our train initially arrives and departs from so thought it would be easier to just stay there

Don't suppose anyone has any personal experience of the Euston Travelodge's and/or the Ibis?!

theres some decent bars further down, past kings cross. If you have a lot of luggage then would make sense to stop near Euston, but 2 nights means you cant have that much. Euston is pretty naff location wise - yes everythings accesible by tube, but tbh you miss the best sights using the tube, so better to be nearer where you want to be, or where there is nightlife imo. Don't forget tube gets patchy after 11PM

Any recommendations on a good area to stay then buddy if not in in Euston? You are right we won't have a lot of luggage, just a smallish case each.

I've stayed at a serviced apartment type place in London a few times, different locations but around Tower Bridge so pretty touristy stuff there!

Think Apartments is the name, no URL but google will find it, can be booked online with quidco+expedia discounts etc and pretty good, get a room+kitchen/washing machine/fridge/stove etc

Ahhhh thanks thepedstar I didn't think about those serviced apartment types. Not sure if they are in my price range though!

Probably will have to be a hotel!

The Travelodge outside Euston station was actually quite nice when I stayed there a couple of years back; the shower in the room was lovely! It was modern inside and had been fully redecorated and refurnished quite recently.

Just don't do what we did and take a right turn when you come out the station, end up walking for 15 minutes clockwise round the station complex (which is surprisingly big!),through a quite dodgy looking estate, before finally ending up on the left-hand side of the station which is where the Travelodge actually is!

There's the travel lodge on City Road which looks to be just over £100 for that weekend. Pretty central, two stops from Euston and some good restuarants round that way too (you've got shoreditch/spitalfields one way, and farringdon the other), plus St Pauls, Tower of London, etc. are dead close.
