Hi There,

I am currently looking into getting another car as a second car and wanting to put it on a limited mileage policy to save on massive insurance costs.

I was wondering if anyone has already done this and how strict insurers are with the amount of miles that you do and if they check how many you have done ETC... Also what sort of penalty's do they give if you go over the mileage allowance?

Any of your previous or current experiences with this would be appreciated so I can see what will be the best course of action for me to do next!.

Cheers

With the limited mileage competition insurance for the Strada, they say you are simply not insured if you go over your mileage. However, you can at any time phone them up and modify the mileage allowance without penalty.

In reality though, mileage is something that is very difficult to police ;)

Thats what I thought, Had a quote off Mr Flux today for a 300ZX TT on a 3K mileage allowance for £459 for the year which I thought was really reasonable.

I think I may end up over my Allowance so just wondered what would happen!

If you have an accident the first thing they will do is ask you to prove you haven't gone over the 3000 miles. If they find you have then all sorts of stuff hits the fan, including your car being crushed as an uninsured vehicle.

There are a number of specialist insurance companies out there and their prices vary a lot, get a specialist magazine and register with the owners club to get details of companies who are friendly to your particular circumstances.

Andi.

Sounds like that would be a legal mine field, if they don't ask you for your milage before they insure you, it would be impossible to proove it either way?

MOT certificates maybe?

9 months into a 3k policy and a MOT certificate shows your car has done 8k in the last 4 months....

But who's to say someone else hasnt also been driving the car under there own DOC cover. Or the owner could have done a lot of track time (which most normal policies dont cover AFAIK).

I just cant see the point in ****ing about with insurance, you know they will wriggle if they can, why give them the excuse to save 100 quid.

Is a limited mileage policy different to the average mileage question when taking out an insurance policy?

IMO, you have two options. Be honest with everything and pay the price and be 95% sure the claim will be honoured, or go for the cheapest option possible assuming certain details have to be omitted and hope you don't get caught. The latter is not really insurance, its just paying for a certificate so you can get a tax disc.

Not condoning the latter but that is what it boils down to.
