HD 6870 & HD 6850 vs. GTX 460 1GB: An Overclocking Study

hi
nice work big guy ill be the first to congratulate

cheers

What do you mean nice work? All he's done is copied some else’s work and didn't even bother posting a link to the original source.

Interesting read though, I would like to similar tests carried out on other sites that test other games but still a interesting read nether the less.

So where is the study? I just see some random graphs. What are we looking at here?

Aslong as the fans stay below 60-65% on my 470s (which they usually do with gaming) I can't hear them above the PSU. Granted they are NOT quiet in furmarks but who runs furmarks daily?

Care to tell me what rpm 65% fan speed is? Please post a screenshot if you don't mind.

Got to say that I found the noise of my Asus 470 running without o'clock at anything other more than 45% both distracting and irritating :(

(No idea how anyone can stand running at 60%-70% - would drive me up the wall.)

The 5870 I had before was much quieter:)

Solved with the Zalman cooler and I've overclocked the card now to 700mhz without issues (noise or temperature!)

Very happy with my 470 now but without 'better' third party cooling it would have had to go !

My gpu cooling mod.

This is a temporary measure until i manufacture a fan holder.

You need a big fan for SLI's 470's. One of these might just do the trick:).

Yep, so it's ~2500rpm for both HD5850/70 at 35% and GTX470/480 at 60%. I can tolerate that level of noise, it doesn't bother me that much when gaming. Wouldn't want to go louder though.

:D, think ill stick with the 120mm, also have 3 front intakes, 2 x 140mm, 1 x 120mm, 2 x 120mm exhausts. Run them all on a zalman zm fc1 + fan controller, all are 1500 rpm fans but most of the time theyre dialled to medium setting.

It's not louder than my GTX280 and runs cooler.
Yes the GTX470 certainly ain't quiet, but they are no louder than previous generation cards.
Hey lads,

I don't wish to admonish you but I just need to point out that what you both have said is "Flawed reasoning" and does not in anyway make the possible high noise levels of the GTX470 any more acceptable!

What you both have said is no differerent from saying

24stone? . . . I'm not fat, everyone else I know is at least 24 stone . . . I don't weigh anymore than them?

Dangerous area? . . . where I live is not particular dangerous? . . . there was only 10 stabbings and two shootings last week . . . this is no more than the last area I lived in . . .

Domestic violence? . . . I don't suffer from domestic violence? . . . my partner only beats me up twice a week . . . no more than the last person I was with

If that's the best you guys can come up with to alleviate any potential GTX 470 worries that the card sounds like a hoovercraft then you both may as well not bother saying anything at all . . . as a wise man once told me

"It is better to remain silent and be thought foolish than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt" :D

I gather what muppet is saying is basically "thanks" for the link . . . maybe thanks for editing all the 1920x1200 Max Max benchmarks into one simple to read graph therefore making a comparative analysis a little bit easier and save something the slight effort of flicking through several pages filled with distracting info and advertisements etc . . . Manners maketh man ;)

Sorry if the hyperlink in the post #1 image confused you instead of a regular text link, like you I feel its important to always source original material . . . if you come across a similar scenario in future try clicking the image before you complain! :D

So where is the study?
Hopefully the people that are actually interested in exmaining the little bit of data in the O.P and intend to make a £130-£180 GPU purchase will "study" the "Facts" to know a bit more about the overclocked performance of the cards which have been benchmarked!

I just see some random graphs
Not really random are they? . . . its all the games from the review running at 1920x1200 with maximum possible settings

What are we looking at here?

In case it wasn't abundantly obvious from the thread title "HD 6870 & HD 6850 vs. GTX 460 1GB: An Overclocking Study" the people that are interested are looking at the differences between these three graphics cards when overclocked:

  • AMD® Radeon™ HD 6850
  • AMD® Radeon™ HD 6870
  • nVidia® Geforce™ GTX 460
The one set of "Facts" about these three cards which is also not present or agreed upen is the price . . . quite important to some people! ;)

Screenshot of my gtx 470's taken after playing a bit of BFBC2.

Auto fan setting, temps at 75-71.

^^ Max of 75 and 71 for overclocked 470's in SLI, great temps, I thought they ran hot lol.

It's simple, if you have a crap case with crap cooling don't expect decent temps with high performance GFX cards.

Yep, thats after playing BFBC2, max settings, DX11, 8 x aa, 16 x af, 1920x1200, my GTX 275's ran hotter and they werent overclocked.
